San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I am applying to graduate school a few places in Scotland and England. Studying sociology. Trying to get into University of Edinburgh or University of Glasgow... Haven't narrowed down any schools in England yet. Would be starting in the Fall 2014 semester.

Will be keeping the sheep, the remaining laying hens and a few roos, the naked neck bantams and about 3 rabbits (2 are my niece's pets and one is mine. The rest have to go.)

you know...there WAS something in the air...or the moon...or whatever....

Look what I found on Friday afternoon!!!! I had suspected this doe was pregnant also and had been watching her rear like a hawk to see if I could predict when. We sheared her last Sunday, and afterwards, she looked a lot smaller so I thought I had more time. But sure enough, Friday morning I noticed her bag was swollen and her gait had changed substantially. I missed the whole birth, and this was a first time momma so I was trying to keep a good eye on her!! It was only a singleton, so I think it must have happened pretty fast.

So now, we have THREE bucklings, 2 angora and this guy is a pygora (pygmy x angora), all fiber goats!! Now I just have to stress about what to do with them, we can't keep all 3!!

Congratulations fellow goat Mammas!!!!! Aren't they the cutest!!!

And in Chicken News...the SAD, I had to put my silver specked Hamburg down yesterday

She wasn't my favorite bird, sort of a pain, but a beautiful gal. I have no idea what happened, if she got stepped on or attacked...she just started hobbling in circles Friday night and flapping one wing sort of weirdly. She went into the coop and got on the roost that night, so I thought it wasn't a big deal. But then yesterday she was falling over on her side, couldn't sit upright and still flapping her one wing constantly and leaving it outstretched. When I went in to get my phone to call my friend about what I should do, the other chickens attacked her. I felt HORRIBLE. I have never seen them do that before, I was only gone 15 minutes an somehen or hens had ripped her comb apart and hurt one of her eyes. She had been moving around the corral all day and no one had bothered her, I guess they took more notice once I picked her up and messed with her and she finally couldn't get away. Ugh.

I saved the FUNNY for last. I went to get hay for the goats this morning, and had some Timothy scraps in a bad by the bales. I lifted up the scraps and found a HOARD of 8 eggs!! I have two hens (one salmon Fav and one Sicilian Buttercup) who always fly over the fence to scavenge for an hour or so a day. I guess the buttercup had taken keen on this hidden spot to lay her eggs for the past couple of weeks!!! She would have had to get inside the tarp and under a flake to do so!! Silly bird. I guess now I know to check there when I get hay
