San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

so far I've been pretty lucky-but we have bobcats and mountain lions that will go after horses and foals out here...plus the coyotes are a pain. However my aussie mix boys do a great job of keeping the nasty predators away...so far. I was outside the other day and watch them take off after a coyote over the hill...lol...coyotes are askeered of my boys..I was so proud of them for being such good protectors..my neighbors have taken to stopping and giving them treats when they drive down the road...it's like the "ice cream truck" for dogs! they hear the car and they run up the driveway and sit and wait for their goodies! lol...then they try to climb in to go for a ride

Rosanne Brown of Rancho San Diego Animal Hospital not only sees chickens but she loves them and is a chicken owner herself. They have other great vets but for chickens you want her.

Edit:
I assumed just chickens. Janet Loken saw my ducks and she's fantastic, too. Used to work there so can tell you from first hand experiance. Will be a bit of a drive for you but don't know anyone else that I'd recommend.

Good to know. I took a chicken to Mission Animal Hospital in Oceanside (they do birds, rabbits etc) and while it all worked out and they were nice, it was clearly the first chicken the staff had worked with.

I was there on an emergency basis, which is probably the only basis I will be at the vet with a chicken.

Me personally or people in general? We raise them to eat. They are supposedly ready to process at 6 weeks but we always wait until 8 weeks. People also keep them for their eggs, apparently popular in Asian cuisine, or people keep them as pets, or use them for dog training.
