Thanks everyone. He has his Associates Degree at Cuyamaca. He will be Majoring in Astronomy and going for a minor in Math. He has to take all the math anyway for Astronomy I think he will only have to take one or two extras to get the Minor.
I had a cousin who got snooty with me for "Allowing" him to choose such a Useless Major. Sheesh. Shes no slouch herself engineering degrees and such. But I told her he can work in any field he wants to after school. Though I think his aim is toward the commercial space effort.

can you give details to time, place and date.would we be there to answer chicken questions?
There's no such thing as a "useless major" - a science degree is always good, lots of career opportunities, and if he goes onto graduate school or for the Ph.D he can always teach, too.
Totally agree. I have a degree in English literature and worked for 16 years as a graphic artist. Just because you have a degree in something, doesn't mean you can do anything and everything else. The degree opens doors that simply aren't there without one.
I agree. I think sometimes people get locked into a box, like my cousin. I believe she totally lacks the ability to think Laterally....There's no such thing as a "useless major" - a science degree is always good, lots of career opportunities, and if he goes onto graduate school or for the Ph.D he can always teach, too.

Gosh you could go into many many different fields that require programming. From Gaming to Defense. SAIC is a huge employer that is all over San Diego in many store fronts. They are a defense contractor.Amen to that. I'm hoping I can one day find another career to give a go. I have my degree in computer science and currently work as a software engineer, but man I'm getting burnt out....Any ideas?![]()

Thanks, but I'm actually contemplating leaving the software engineering field, or at least the development/programming aspect of it. I have the itch to try something new, just not sure what....lolI was laid off when SAIC bought the company I worked for. Apparently my job was redundant. I was bummed as they seem like a really great company. They have many "business units" that do different things (my company was a defense contractor).
Another company to look at is Qualcomm. They are nearly almost always hiring and all my friends that work there love the company. They have great benefits as well.
