San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I went to the feed store this morning to get some feed. There were a group of people around the baby chicks so of course i had to check them out. To my horrible dismay a mom was letting her toddler pick up the chicks and drop them. I had to put a stop to the insanity immediately. The store owner thanked me after laying down the law to the offenders. two of the poor chicks were injured

, one with spradle leg and another with what appears to be a slipped Achilles tendon. Well both chicks were given to me free of charge, as well as 2 more just to keep them company. And all I wanted was feed!!!

The lil one with spradle leg brace was applied and although it is a bit annoyed seems to be doing ok. The one with the slipped tendon, I rolled it back into place and used a bendy straw as a splint. This one not looking so good

They are all Anconas.

Errrrr!!!! So glad you stopped them, but sorry it was too late for those chicks not to be injured. Who gives a baby bird to a child as a toy!!!!???!!?? What is wrong with people?

That's why I won't sell bunnies at Easter and my chick ads on craigslist were strongly worded against using chicks as easter party favors.

I'm so glad you put a stop to the chick abuse. I'd be seeing red.

What is it about the one with the straw splint (genius, btw) that is worrying you? I have a new appreciation for the ability of chicks to heal after one of our chicks had a very ugly leg break - exposed bone and all. It took a few weeks of TLC, but today she walks normally and you'd never know she'd been injured at all. Here's hoping your little one heals just as well.
