San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Thanks for the offer Lois.... Hopefully I will have help during the week from my neighbor tom. I may just beg for the money to fill the big tank. 3000 gallons. But I have to concentrate on selling my car to pay for the repair. 3000 gallons of water delivered is about four hundred dollars. The pump repair is 1500 dollars I cant do both.

Maybe, as a community, we can start up a collection to help donate to the repair of your pump? I'm not Miss Moneybags or anything, but I would happy to donate some money toward the repairs.

What are the specs for the pump deb?

To be honest I am not sure. I priced them retail just quickly and they run about 1000 dollars. So I suspect he gets em for wholesale price.

The well is 450 feet deep and has to run off of 115 Volts Then it gets wired to a controller in the pump house. From the well the water goes to two eighty gallon pressure tanks. I know if I run the water in the house for more than an hour the well goes low enough to trip the pump saver switch. I have been told my well is a low producer. This well guy put in this well pump that needs to be replaced under a different owner, I want to say back in 1990s.

What he says is the pump got sanded. Meaning the sand in the bottom of the well eventually wore out the impellers. So it runs like the devil but doesn't produce. Which explains why my electric bill was triple what it should be. He recommends going down in power meaning less gallons per hour it will pump. He said not to worry I could still take showers.... But the deal is the water pressure is not delivered by the pump it is delivered from the two pressure tanks, the water is pumped up hill with the aid of a booster pump. The run is 1000 feet the rise is somewhere around 20 feet. The booster pump does that work. But by using a lower capacity pump it will last longer because it wont suck sand up as readily.

And No putting a filter on it is not an option. The well is drilled through riverbed down into Decomposed Granite. DG always sheds particles. The actual well hole started out probably about six to eight inches in diameter then it got lined with a six inch black pipe liner to keep it from collapsing over the years. The pump itself is probably five and a half inches in diameter.

I can spend less for the materials for sure. But it takes special equipment to pull the sucker rod up and out of the well, with the pump attached to it. Sucker rod I believe is the term for it Probably from windmill times. But That will be black pipe 450 +- feet long and its been in the ground since 1990 or so. My water is very hard. So if they cant un screw it they will have to cut it up.

They had water based paint inside unfortunately. I know its non toxic and for someone who wants to clean one out it would be great. The one I bought had Cola syrup inside.

BTW for anyone wanting to make a Hydroponics setup these would be perfect. Pressure wash inside the hole in the top is a good size.... But it needs to be pressure washed with a goood biodegradable detergent.... before using for any kind of potable water system.
