San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Elizabeth, I'm going to have some Marans & Isbars hatching in the next week or so (I'll check dates). Stick some fake eggs under Miss Broody, and then she can raise a few of these chicks for me.

I popped them back under the broody, maybe someone will still hatch out next Wednesdayish. They were only in the fridge overnight...fingers crossed!

I had two hatch out today from the first test hatch. I need to get a picture of the EE/Olandsk baby. Cutest chick I have ever seen with super puffy chipmunk muffs!

Life with goats Not chicken related...

Remember all the trips up to the house I had to make last week? Hauling water trying to save my chickens and get water to my horse and goats. Untill the well got fixed. Mom took me up a couple of times to check on the animals too.

This week mom called Grandma. I over heard the conversation, apparently someone stole Moms license plate. Mom and Grandma couldn't figure out when it was taken. My son Dean and I were puzzling over it as well. Dean was thinking that her decorative license plate cover was why. Its brass and has palm trees on it.

I said No because the plate itself is valuable because you can put it on and not have to register your car. And told him if it ever happens to him it needs to be reported and new license plates need to be ordered. When grandma got off the phone she came in and told us the very same that we were deducing from half a conversation. She said mom was going to have to order another one and that she was already taking care of it.

Mom had talked to her neighbor and warned them to be on the watch for license thiefs....

The next day mom called and talked to grandma then talked to me. She said the new replacement license was only 19 bucks. I told her that was pretty good I thought they were more like 30 or 40. She said that the DMV guy told her to cut an ex in the License so no one could steal it.... Then I realized she wasn't talking about the License plate she was talking about this years Blue sticker....

She said, "They didn't get it all but Dang it looked as if they had Gnawed it off."

"OH MY GAWD.... Mom .... " I said. "I thought they had taken the whole plate...."

"Um no," she said, "but they had really messed the layers up. The suggestion was that she get a putty knife and scrape as many layers off as I can before putting the new sticker on."

"Mom, " I said, "I know who took your sticker.... It was Rikki. Then I started laughing.... A couple of months ago I had to Whack Rikki with a pvc pipe to get him off my truck sticker......" He got a couple of swipes in but not the serial number. I offered to pay for the new one but she was laughing so hard she said no....

then She had to hang up so she could tell the neighbors.

OH my Gawd.... Life with Goats.

You know when I first started with my chickens. I was all over this site researching how to make an incubator. I made one and took 16 eggs and they all hatched. Then SO MUCH researching on how to take care of these chicks and then SO much more researching on how to tell gender (which I waited to I was 100% sure) and only 2 out of 16 chicks were girls.

Then I thought this is too much work. WHY CANT ONE OF MY HENS be a MAMA? Spring came so we bought chicks.

Then my Cochin started brooding (FIRST BROODER EVER). Things went bad. I had thought she was attacking her babies as they hatched (she was not it was a cat). So I turned the incy on and I hatch the 3 eggs that were left. The 3rd chick I tried to give her was a day after I gave her the other two and she would not accept it. Then I was going to raise the 3 chicks together but my husband came home with 8 more chicks to keep the ONE chick happy. Not to mention that my daughter came home with 2 chickens from school (they are roos) .

Now I have another hen 3 weeks brooding. We have had her for 3 years first time. I am going to get her chicks this time.

I cannot believe I was researching "how to make a hen go broody"?

Also I dont know what to do with my roos? I keep giving them back to the store after I raise them to be sweet gentlemen...

Jeez Deb I just caught up on reading BYC and couldn't believe the crap you've been through! I'm so sorry that all happened to you. You've handled it so well, (no pun intended), much better than I would have for sure.

Thanks so much Bonnie.... Its a survival mode for me. I do what I can do to make as many as I can survive...

Its odd about two months ago I felt the urge to rehome my Chickens. But I couldnt find a way to do this. I am unable to transport more than two or three. but I felt the need to move them all but was unable to provide shipping space and cages to fit in the back of a truck without a tailgate. I Rationalized it with the fact that I really didnt want to give them up.

If I had followed through, the crisis would have resolved itself with minimal loss. I should have listened to my guardian angels.

The key is to learn and move on.

Or the time I brought them home in the back of my Geo Metro. At that time it was Four goats. RIP Miss Dewdrop.

Hey folks - need some help here. Doing some "spring" cleaning and found this scary thing. It is about an inch long and has a huge body. It was not too keen of being photographed.
Does anyone know what this spider is, and is it dangerous, and should it be in a food storage area?
