San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Things have calmed down for our family so I'd love to know when the next SD meetup is!

My RIRs and Orphingtons just started laying last week but our other 16 hens are holding back, almost 6 months old! I'm dying to see the eggs from Dana's Marans and my Ameracaunas!

This is such an addiction. I go out and stare at them all day long. Ok after work for an hour or so but I could easily make it all day! I make my tea and sit in the hammock and just watch them! Have you seen this video? This is me.

After hatching barnyard mixes (RIR and Olive eggers?) from our neighbors, Dana's Marans, and 2 Barnavelders from another lady in Ramona; getting 5 Ameracaunas from Ideal Poultry; and 2 Orphingtons, a Silky, a BLR Wyandotte, 2 SL Wyandottes, and an Australorp from feed stores or Chickens Galore we have 3 roos and 20 hens. What am I missing? ;) LOL I am already thinking about what breeds I want to add in the Spring!

Sidenote: how do you put what u have down below in your signature or whatever? I want to list my "babies" down there --- |

Saw that, thanks! Not really up for driving that far unless my mom's house is a pitstop (Corona) but she is on a roadtrip! (jealous!) is there a SD one soon or does this one count as the quarterly one?

thanks for the instructions!

barred rocks and lemon cuckoo orpingtons - a must for a backyard flock lol

Just curious, does anyone have a feather plucker I could rent about once a quarter? I might be forced to buy one, but it seems so stupid for how often I will use it. I'm fine with just skinning the birds, but my customers don't think it's great.

There is a DIY thread that i belong to and a homemade plucker was recently posted

Look for post 1213 the last few photos When I asked how well it worked she said better than the store bought because it didnt break the skin the on the chicken.

Hi, I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself to other San Diegan Chicken-keepers. We have 3 hens in the city - Normal Heights. They are a Buff Orpington and 2 Barred Rocks - we raised them from chicks and they are about 7 months old now (and started laying at 5 months!) I have a question, this will be our girls' first winter, do you heat your coop in the city, or are they ok in there at night? Thanks in advance for the advice!
I'm up in Julian where temps drop to 27 INSIDE the insulated coop. I don't have heat and they do just fine. My bantams may need to be brought inside when temps drop below freezing.

:welcome

Hi folks, have met a few of you in the past.     Roxie (my Cochin) has developed a paralized leg from about the elbow down.  Has anyone heard of  this issue?  I took her to the vet and couldn't see anything on xrays.  Blood work was normal.  She doesn't use or stand on the leg.  They think it may be a tumor, but unsure.  Any ideas?  She seems to be normal mentally (in case you were thinking heavy metal).

Next, I want to find a good home for my 4 girls.  I've had predators kill some of my favorites - it's just too sad for me.   Thought I had it predator proof.  Roxie and Flufferbutter, my white Silkie, are probably 4-5 years old.  I have two cochin/serama mix girls that are about 1.5 yrs old.   Anyone interested?  You must have been taking care of chickens for awhile and have a predator proof area.  Help!
It's a good idea to post pics. Most of us are visually stimulated and ultra spontaneous....okay...I'M those things... :p

Sorry, don't know what could be wrong with your girl.

BTW, what do you think was getting into your coop?

Just out of interest, have you ever lost a banty to cold temps?

Back when I was a lad in Oz, we routinely had night temps of 32-34F with a few nights getting down to 22F. Our coop had 3 sides of GI sheet and the front was wire. We never lost a bird to exposure.

I did not have banties though.

I'm having a hard time visualizing this, do people have birds that are tame enough to actually let run around and not worry they will spook and take off?

If my schedule allows I would like to come. What time does it start at?

What are the pros and cons of removing a roosters spurs? What age is it done at? I have a 1.5 year old with some prettyg good spurs on him, the rest of my roosters are about 8 months and just barely have nubs right now.
