I took my mom to Chinatown to send money for Chinese New Years and I asked her to say the name of my cake. I will try my best. Thay Ahn Go - The first word as you said is EGG.

We don't speak the same dialect so for all I know we can have different names for the same things.

We are thinking about going to Chinatown next weekend to see the new year celebration but I have not got the ok from my boss yet.

What are J chokes ?

Al, My mom speaks PERFECT Cantonese. I told her to say it in Cantonese because I know you are from Hong Kong. Oh well, you will know what it is for sure on Saturday. I hope I make it really good. The making of this cake is so temperamental.

I hope

your boss lets you have the time off. Road trips are fun. I think they have the parade in Alhambra too- the new Chinatown. HA! I have not been to to parade since I was a kid. I hated all of the firecrackers. It scared me so much.

Missed it. Sorry. I was lazy to spell it out and most of the time I shorten it.

Jerusalem Artichokes

They sort of look like sunflower plants but you eat the roots. They can be roasted and I think they are Delicious. I think it is kind of like a sticky potato. They are VERY invasive plants. They have to be controlled. Sort of like mints. I showed my mom at the store and she had NO clue what they were. So for sure it is not an Asian thing.

Nancy and all, my father grew Jerusalem artichokes and they are tasty and can be added to almost any dish. But they are very invasive and for that property I would like some starter plants and one of most all the other plants that you mentioned. Besides the plants Iris and Aloe, I will bring eggs that can be hatched or eaten.

Nancy & Al,

While on the topic of ancient Chinese secrets

any recipe for steamed pears with honey? My daughter was told to try this for her cold, and I thought it might be a yummy dessert to bring to the meet-up. I'm looking online, but do you have any hints? I'm not Chinese, or any Asian at all - just a half Italian that loves to cook, and eat of course!

The Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also called the sunroot, sunchoke, earth apple or topinambur, is a species of sunflower native to the eastern United States, from Maine west to North Dakota, and south to northern Florida and Texas.[1] It is also cultivated widely across the temperate zone for its tuber, which is used as a root vegetable.[2]

I tried growing 2 kinds of sunflowers last year and they both die!

But I could try one piece of it and see if it will grow.

We had cook that before, you need pear, rock surgar, some white fugus(I am not sure what the name is), and honey, maybe some lotus seeds if you like. Put everything in a bowl and steam it for a couple hours.
