San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I ditto that one Flower.

KKH, I know its hard. I had to practice before coming to the last meetup, how to enjoy the animals, but not take home anything. My DD's and I went to the mall, and played with the puppies at the pet store, and and practiced leaving them them there when we were done. It can be done, but it does take some effort.

I failed, I was surfing Craigslist, I am very proficient at it. I found a man in valley Center selling what he said were SERAMAS. So i got excited, i called and then hung up. Then laiter he called me back. I asked for photos, he said sorry he cant!! I said OK cool i still am interested... He said he had been breeding them for a while, he got them from a friend. I thought COOL. I asked if I can meet him at his home, that i ws particular about the birds i am looking for. He said NO!!! I said OK i am still interested where can me meet. (mind you by this time many red flags hae been thrown to me and i think i am waring my horses blinders at the moment) He said we can meet in valley center, so i drove the HR, i gave him specifics on what i wanted and was looking for, no Roosters just pullets hens, short back yellow shanks. OK so i am waiting, he pulls up with like 15 chickens in a 2.5 X 2 ft cage. i counted 6 roosters, and a bunch of huge hens. I said wow this is not what i was expecting!!! he said yeah i brought more hoping you would buy them all!!! My not expecting was that they were not sermas!! THE guilt set in, I dont know why i felt guilt when i drove an hr and offererd to go to his home, so he did not have to catch the birds. But still felt obligated to get a few. But alas, i picked out a white-cream hen that was SITTING down with everyone walking on her and another SDW hen. If any of you saw my seramas in ramona the SDW hen i got was like 3 times the size of my biggest bird!! I did not have the heart to tell him that his birds were not seramas... He believed in his heart of hearts that they were. So i get the birds home, to quarentine pen and get the little tan-white hen out MY GOD she is on stilts, i did not realize how long her legs were. After lots of reasearch i found her to be a
http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/Modern-Game-B74.aspx Her color is red burchen, her size is similar to a serma but on stilts. This was an issue in the beginning, i bought two birds due to guilt not i fell on love with the one hen I got and have to find her a mate!! Does anyone know of someone who breeds these little things, she is sooooo friendly aswell. Oh and also if anyone starts up a chicken anonamous meeting class please put me at the top of the list!! But really does anyone locally breed MODERN GAME BANTAMS, other than the man that will meet me on the street corner!!

OH my Gosh Carahamer. I laughed until I cried. That is the craziest looking chicken anatomy I have seen. You'd have to cut a chicken door twice as high as average just to allow suffucient head clearance. There are advantages though.....my girls have to strain and leap to steal my grapes. That chicken with the stilts for legs would have no problem at all.

BTW. I do not think it's strange at all for someone to drive for hours, to meet a man ,with chickens (who might be seramas), in a parking lot, in the middle of no where...

Cara - I think the moderns are cool! There may be a good market for those, I do well on bantam games and I know the moderns are hard to find out here. I have thought about ordering them many times, but my plate is already full with all the breeds I have.
I do know ideal has them available right now and you can do small orders if you don't mind packing peanuts. I usually just give those away on craigslist. If they are free you won't be stuck with them for long.

Carahammer maybe KKH can teach you your new modern game bird to do her dance. Seriously people were very interested in the Modern Game Bird at the Victorville show and they are listed as very expensive.

And I ditto "you sound like a very normal person to me to drive hours to meet a man in the parking lot" and look at the adventure that lies ahead with your new breed of chicken.
