San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Polish don't count in chicken math either, right Cara? I went to the Hawthorne Feed Chicken Days this morning, just to look, because, you know, I took home 8 gorgeous silky babies from the meet up last week, and my brooder is full.... I swear, 6 Polish (well maybe 4 polish and 2 Houdan chicks), jumped into my little cat carrier. Now I know these can't possibly count as whole chickens. I swear, this is it. No more chickens for me....I swear.

Really???? These are not chickens at all. They are a rare breed of miniature penguin

I don't think I could have resisted those polish either. They are the cutest things ever!!! I told my hubby if I decide not to keep my Jungle Fowl, I will HAVE to have a couple of Polish to console me! He just rolled his eyes. LOL

I just set 48 eggs of Jungle Fowl, OEGB and Seramas and was debating on setting 9 duck eggs too. I must be crazy. LOL

Miriam - If you need developed eggs at some point let me know, I really did not need to be hatching these! It is a select few that purchase these guys and I am not sure I can handle shipping chicks without feeling guilt. I just didn't want them to go to waste.

Tammy, What kind of Duck Eggs are you setting or thinking of setting? Princess Leah's offspring? I will preorder 1 dozen if they are just like her. I so

I went to Hawthorne yesterday. Did you see my DD's pic on their big sign? She is holding her Buff Orp. I really wanted to get some Ameracaunas, but I had to resist. I may be bringing home lots of babies from the eggs I bought/were given from Cari, Cara & Hatching Fever for the science fair.

I must say, Hatching Fever has a really cool set up for his chickens! They are nice looking hens of all breeds, with a handsome White Cochin Daddy. And his turkey is just adorable!

I'm not sure whos are whos other than the 2 blue ones were from the mallards I no longer have. I only have "leah" and "snow" who is also sweet. They both lay white eggs I can't tell apart. I may know once they hatch.

Heres a pic, Snow is on the right.

enzolove: I would leave the lit off the box with your mealworms as you do not want any condensation build up from the veggies. They will not crawl out. If you want to keep other critters out, maybe you can put some kind of screen on top. Poking holes in the lit would work, too, but that would be way too much work for me.

It has snowed non stop all day. There's a foot of snow out on the deck. It's supposed to get down to 22 degrees tonight!! Snow is reported down on Old Julian Hwy. I'm wondering how Chef Glenn is doing on Mt. Palomar when temps are supposed to get down to 16 degrees!! My girls are all snug in their insulated coop, the bantams covered in a crate in the garage and my two new little ones toasty warm in the loft.

I'm feeding meal worms to my two new chickies. My MFC bites the heads off so that I can feed the body to my little LF Cochin chick. Teamwork!! LOL
