San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hi All,

It is definitely cold, cold winter wonderland up here on Palomar Mountain,
(don't let my wife hear you say Mt. Palomar, she has called TV news talking heads
twice due to them calling it that, she is Palomar Mountain native).

Anyway I installed infrared 250 light in the Booted Serama coop, ceramic units in 2 other Serama coops and have crock
pots (on warm) with regular lights in two other coops, chicks and moms in heated workshop, with one Serama Mama
setting on 8. So..appears all well, just a bit spooked at some big cat tracks outside coops, we have had mountain
lion problems up here lately so I am extra cautious with access.

Has anyone here had experience with the Night Guard red blinking lights? I am considering a couple of those
in addition to the security lights I have.

Hope to see you all at next meet up!

Glenn & Allison,

Glad to hear you are both doing well with the snow. We had snow yesterday morning but by 9am it was back to cold, drizzly rain. We had so much rain Friday night that the two grow-out pens were standing in 2 inches of water. Fortunately the youngsters were smart enough to stay in their respective Dogloos & kept peeking out to see if the water had receeded. I fed them inside the igloos & the majority of them stayed inside the remainder of the day.

Not so for the free range layers. They had to seek out any little bug that might have had the misfortune of getting drowned the night before. I was bent over feeding when one of the Red Stars jumped on my back. I think she was tired of having wet feet.

It snowed last night & all the trees & bushes are frosted with the white fluffy stuff. However, the stars are out now so I know the storm is over for us.

Glenn, regarding the Night Guard lights.....several years ago we had a "huge" Bobcat problem. I invested in the lights but I'm sad to say, they didn't work for "me". It didn't seem to matter where I located them, the cats just ignored them. The motion sensor lights worked the best for us.

Allison....I'm so pleased that the new additions to your family are working out. I applaud you for taking on the task of the blind Cochin girl. I have a severly crossed beak EE who lives up here at the house. She has to eat a special food so that she can get enough to sustain her. Alice is forever on the watch to find me in the kitchen as she is positive the only reason I'm there is to feed her. She sits on the windowsill over my sink & waits until I prepare her dish. She is such a joy even with her handicap.

I'm sorry I didn't make the last meet-up. I'm looking forward to the next . With warmer weather on the way, it should be fun.

Hi everyone! I just checked on Tom and he seems a lot better today, probably because there wasn't anyone there to feed him bread for the last few days. His eyes look better, except the one with a cataract in it. Someone did leave some scratch/chicken feed around and I left some birdseed for Tom to sift through. He seems to like these little soft seeds in it and generally doesn't eat most the rest except the millet and sunflower seeds. I am going to try to find out what those seeds are and maybe put together my own birdseed/grain mixture without the stuff in it that's bad for ducks.

We got some, too. (I wish I'd hauled my rear out of bed a little earlier, but whatever.)

The pop door on the coop was frozen solid, too - I had to go in the big door, and kick it a bit to get it back open. So happy to see some sunshine today!

I just had a lot of rain. The entire front yard was a duck pond yesterday, at least they enjoyed it. They were having a party playing and splashing about.
The silkies all need baths from digging in the mud! They also seemed to have fun playing in it.
I have such a mess to clean now, poor jungle fowl - their run was one big giant mud puddle-they just roosted the entire time not happy about it.

Wow! Snow in Jamul!! That's exciting

We had about 12". It was so pretty this morning. Kids have been out sledding with their big brother who came down from LA just to play in the snow with them.
Nancy, my fig trees are under that pile of snow under the window. Hope they're cold hardy!! My little girl out the back door on the deck. We had to shovel a path for the dogs to do their business.

Looking down on the coop and the road from our garage. Inside the run. Only one hen dared to taste it, the rest stayed clear of it until it melted. Too funny..I couldn't even chase them over there.

Darlene, I'm glad to know that Tom is feeling better. I thought about him last night and this morning. It's so good of you to look after him.
Glenn, thanks for the warning!

Do your silkies enjoy their bath ? Albert seemed to like his especially the blow dryer time. I just washed his "would have been" mate's crest only. She does need a complete bath but I have other stuff to do. What funny little creatures they are ! I would never have imagined that these curious little creatures could be like little puppies. If only i could train them to poop on the toilet ! Wouldn't that be something ?

KKH wonderful pictures ! Great fun in the sun and SNOW !

I found someone in Orange county who would take him if I can catch him and meet her half way. I am not sure about it, yet. I do think I can catch Tom, but even though he lets me get really close and touch him, I don't think he would go without a fight. Plus, I would need a cage, too. I would really miss him if he's gone. I'd rather have someone closer to San Diego take him.

We've decided to get another coop, a bigger one, for the broilers. It needs to be 8'x8' or preferably larger, but it doesn't matter how tall it is, even 4' would be fine.

I need it to be CHEAP! Like garbage off Craigslist cheap, just workable so I can fix it up and use it.

If anyone knows or sees one can you please let me know?

Thank you all!

PS. LOVE the pics of the snow, especially yours KKH- just beautiful!
