San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Well,,, Sad news for me. I lost my favorite Mottled rooo this AM from the cold. He is one that I had kept back from the previous seramas I got from Jerry, I wanted him as a pet. I guess that he did not get near the nens and must have gotten to cold. RIP Little Buddy!!! I have 6 chicks from Him all are beautiful...

Cara, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. These little guys appear to be so resilient that sometimes you forget how vulnerable they are. I can't imagine that the tiny body mass of a serama puts out much heat, either. The weather is sure not what we expect here in late Feb. Cold and wet is never a good combo. RIP little guy

Cara- I'm so sorry. That is heartbreaking. It has been exceptionally cold this past weekend, hasn't it. I put up a tarp over the front of my open coop, just to try to keep the chill out. I was worried about my 2 OEGB hens. They were a bit slow to come out this morning.

Enzolove- I've only bathed a chick before, not a full grown hen!! Its pretty funny. With some, you can certainly tell where the saying "Mad as a wet hen" originated!!

Newbee- I'm glad to hear your babies are doing well.

Sorry to hear that Cara. I've been putting my little D'uccles and my NN cockerel in the garage at night. It's been under 20 up here. I see the little wild birds hopping around in the snow and wonder how they survive the nights in these temps. I've been feeding the wild birds cracked corn to try to help them out a bit. I didn't realize it got that cold down in Ramona. Such extreme temperatures there!!

Cara sorry to hear about your loss. Only the strong survive in this weather eh ? This is the very reason that I could not raise your exotic birds.

Michelle there are pictures somewhere on BYC of chickens being bathed but I will try to have some taken next time my little Diva is bathed. She likes the experience so the "Quote" is not appropriate for her. I just put a basin in the kitchen sink, plop her in, soap her up and rinse off. After she is wrapped in towels in my lap I use the blow drier. Once I bathed a silver Ameraucana who tolerated the experience well and seemed to strut around proud afterward. That night in a very large coop with a terraced roost her sister crapped dead center in the middle of her back. I always wondered if she was "Jealous for the attention !"

Flower - I'll have to give it a try, now that I have a pretty good idea - sounds about like how I bathe Enzo! I'll wait until it warms up a bit.

Cara - I'm so sorry about your favorite roo, may he rest in peace.

Cara- How very sad. So sorry about your little guy. I would keep at least one of his babies to remember him by. Maybe his purpose in life was to bring them to you and it was just his time to leave here and go to that better place.

- I will try to take some pics when I get the chance to bathe my dirty little chickens. I just put them in the kitchen sink with warm water and dawn, wash, rinse and towel dry. Then I put them in one of those cat litter boxes with the roof and attach hair dryer (on low) in the door, I supervise to prevent fire or it getting too hot in there and make sure it isn't directly on them. It works kinda like the dryer cages at the dog groomers with the warm air circulating inside. They just take a nap in there until they are dry. A pet carrier would work also.

Oops make sure you start at page one.... somehow this link is on a middle page.
have fun everyone

How funny. My gosh she has quite a process! I wonder about the stain remover and how safe it is. It sure would be nice to remove stains from the white silkies. I was planning on trying baking soda and maybe peroxide to de-stain and whiten.
