San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

One of my broodies left her nest in the dog crate briefly this afternoon for a dust bath. When I wanted to refill her water and feeder, a Blue Jay was in her nest and pecked an egg open.....

Yeah, I know. I guess I love their spunk, those and the Mockingbirds. I know people get frustrated with the Mockingbirds nighttime songs, and I'm sure those same people don't like the sounds of my roosters at 5am, but I love all those noises. I hear them, and count them.... and it puts me back to sleep, like counting sheep....

I also have to share my blueberries with the mockingbirds. They won't accept peanuts. LOL.

I get a migratory bird called the "cow bird" in my yard, and from what I've read, they aren't much nicer.

Hey everyone- My MIL just called me, her neighbor is moving to Louisiana, and needs to find a home for his 4 hens.

They are about 2 yrs old, 3 Leghorns, and 1 Barred Rock, laying 3-4 eggs every day. They are free, and come with a coop (delivered).

I know most of us are at capacity, but if you have any friends or neighbors that might be interested, let me know!

We are on day 14 here at broodyland. She is still on the 5 eggs altho' I only think I can see things going on in 3 of the eggs. Did go and buy a better flashlight from the Depot and that did help my amateur candling efforts. I have next Tuesday 17th as day 20 so I have completely blocked off my calendar for the entire week

. If nothing hatches, I will need a back-up plan and may be calling for a couple of baby chicks.....new coop should be ready Friday!

Bit of a update. The Delaware pullet that my dog pulled down during her sleep has recovered. Not 100%, I can tell it is her when she is running. For awhile she could not fly out of the area I had them in but she can now. I think she will be fine.

Buff Rock broody is still going strong. I will be giving her fertile eggs. Getting a crate and nest box for her. Just need to set it up. Her sister gave up. A black Australorp is going strong now. Her sister escaped the coop and has no intentions of being a mama which is fine by me.

I hope all is well with everyone.

I am so sad to see 30 hens needing a home. If anyone here is going to look, lmk. I may be able to squeeze in a few.

Nancy
