San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Well Cracking Up and I finally connected.... Sorry Lois my computer took a dump.

And Now I have my first Guinea Keets in five or six years. Woo Hoo

They are sooo dang cute too. She brought me ten and we met up in Clairemont. They came home in a little cardboard box.

I forgot my plastic cat carrier. Once they got in the box and we settled in the car all peeping stopped except for the occasional trill or chirpie, and tapping of beaks on cardboard. I had to then drive all the way to Blossom Valley to get Turkey starter because all the close feed stores either don't stock it or were out.....

. And was delighted to find that Not only does Double S carry it but they have it for a good four dollars cheaper than those in Santee and Lakeside.

We were concerned we might lose one or two because their water had spilled a little on their way down from Valley center. Then the long tortuous trip back to Santee and my moms house. Poor planning on my part. Got the brooder set up the usual light bulb in plastic bin food and water and shelf liner. Opened the box and they were all SOUND asleep in a big pile.... and so toasty warm. I hated to roust them out of their slumber. At first i thought "oh my god" a couple were dead beaks shoved into the shelf liner spread out wings.... But as soon as I touched them they were up and scurrying about. Everyone transferred well to their new home for the next week or two. And when I left last night they were back in a pile under the light sawin ZZZZZs.

Mom checked on them at about eleven and they were all up and doing Keet stuff. She checked them again this morning for me and she says they have food ALL over the place.... Everyone is up and doing keet stuff again.... There are three in there that are about a week younger than the rest and they are doing just fine....

So today Mom and I are off to get better feeders and better waterer for that bin. The ones I have are too big for the space. And some more shelf liner and paper towels and maybe some other stuff that i don't need but have to have because I am Too excited.

OH and I will get some pictures Honest.

Thanks again Lois.

Hey friends...

Thought I'd through up a cute pic of my little'uns. They are about 2-3 months old. I'm letting them out for (supervised) free ranging with the big girls now.
From L-R

1- SL Wyandotte pullet (Jacob, but yes, its a pullet.. long story) from Cari's eggs
2- Golden Phoenix Roo (Logan) from Hatching Fever
3- Light Sussex pullet (Daisy) from OntheSpot (Norco meet up)
4- Blue Cochin Roo (Puff Daddy, aka P Diddy) from Hatching Fever

All are doing really well, and getting along!! I was worried about the two roos for a while, but P Diddy is getting SO much bigger than Logan the Phoenix, that I think Logan finally quit picking on him.... so there may be peace for now... What P Diddy lacks in aggressiveness, he makes up in size, that's for sure!

I ended up with some guinea eggs from a swap and planned on just selling them if/when they hatched. Problem is... I hatched only one and it is the cutest darn thing and just too sweet and gentle. On top of that, I think he's lavender (my fav color)!
Now I think I have to keep him!!! He is making friends with quail babies right now, and will be moved to the bigger chick brooder soon once he is big enough to begin integrating to live with chickens. I'm praying he won't eventually be too noisy for me to keep,

he is very quiet now, but I know their reputation! Some noise is ok, but I don't wanna drive neighbors too batty... lol

Perchie - I am in Santee if you ever wanna come by and see the birdies or hang out and talk chicken- guinea whatever... I bet I could cure your problem of no chickens too!! lol
my place is also grand-fathered in, as well as my neighbors place so I'm lucky here too.

Nancy - I am pretty sure I will be in Norco on Saturday, maybe I can catch up with you then?

Hello San Diego -ers!

I am coming to San Diego tonight for a wedding this weekend. I just received my order of day old bantam Ameraucana chicks from John Blehm. He sent me TWICE my order. Eek! So my ltitle shed has 50 bantams in it.

If anyone wants some I could bring some down tonight if you want to go pick them up in La Jolla. I would have to figure out a way to bring some safely down, but if you are really interested let me know. Also they are $5 a piece, but if you buy 5 I'll give you a free chick.

They are silver and lavender bantam Ameraucanas.

I planning on helping Larrisa a little, with a purchase of five lavender. I decided bantams work for me because I can fit more birds into that same space. It is all about how many you can take care of in a certain amount of space.
