San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

The ordinance passed. Cara has details, she went. Sux for all of us. I don't think our resistance stood a chance, but hey, vote for Bill Horn.... he was the only nay vote on the proposal.

Well Thank you to Rachel for representing us. That took a lot of time and effort and is appreciated. And thanks to Cara for going.

I wonder how and when they plan to roll this BS out......................and how they will justify or have the right to come onto private property. ANd what they will do with the family/pet roos they take. although I think know......

I was terribly dissapointed at the # of people who attended!! there were 5 chicken people, fighting for all who dared to say that is wrong, no one really cared enough to make a stand and show up in person!! YOUR LOSS, San diego county. Every rooster you are over the limit will be counted as a separate fine!! Rooster is defined as 6 months, or crowing, or adult feathers. For those of us who get the stuffing roos from Ideal for meat or have several color lines going and need several different rooster to keep lines going, if you have take them time to come the the 1 hr Meeting might have had a different outcome!! Dianne Jackobs made a statement that Oh i have raised chickens and i know that you only need one rooster in a flock and that you can eat meat chickens at 16 weeks old!!! Ok woman not every bird is a cornish and not every flock is laying chickens!! This is makeing me angry to type this out, Just like voting you cant sit back and say ahh otherw will vote and the one i want to get it is for sure!! WE LOST

It's nice that you had the ability to make it to the meeting. It was a work day during work hours. Many people cannot afford to take the day off and emailed letters instead as was requested. How many people did the "other side" have representing them?

Ordinances can be changed or amended. I don't think that the county is going to systematically start sending AC out to homes to do a rooster census and cull birds on the spot.

Cara - It was great that you were able to attend and it was important but as KKH said not everyone has that flexibility. However you should not assume that because someone was not able to go that they did not do anything to fight for the cause. I for one wrote a letter and passed the petition onto many of my non-chicken friends to sign and they did. As well as it educated them on chickens and how ridiculous the local government is.
I understand your disappointment. But you are not alone.

Honestly, We had a total on 315 online signatures, I got another 45 from the feed stores and people who entered them, several petitions were stollen from the feed stores. I think that many of the chicken community were all squawking like a hen with the rest of the crew while laying an egg, all making a big deal but only one of them comitting to the act. Just angry, upset, I know it is showing in what i post and I hope tha you all can understand, I am not pointing fingers at any one person, just dissapointed for all. It just shows if anyone ever has something that is very important to them DO NOT SIT BACK, go in person never rely upon others, they will let you down every time... OMG i feel like such a grouch, I had a friend go with me yesterday, he has been breeding OEGB for 40 years he has 6 color lines going that he has had strong for 35 years. He needs at least 2 roosters for each color line he says if he is going to keep them going, that = 12 roosters, when he bought his home 40 years ago he made sure it was registered unlimited small animals, this is by the way how he makes his living by selling these beautiful little birds and he has done so all his life. When you show birds the popular ones to show are the males and that is what he sells, now he must get rid of all but 6 adult roosters!!! He is 73 years old, i hugged him as he sobbed on my shoulder yesterday, HOW ARE my WIFE AND I GOING OT LIVE HE SAID!!! yeah tell me if you would be angry!!

That is trully a touching story, cara.I feel so bad for him and his wifey.

I owe the whole chicken community a big appology for being absent from what I feel in my heart is important.
I too have several roos that I want to use as breeding and I will have to choose between what I see as the best of each breed.

Im asking myself how could I not have gone to such an important issue, now I must pay the price of my absence and so many others like me.

IM SORRY CARA AND ROOSTER LOVING COMMUNITY
please accept my applogies

Thanks Renee, not looking for apoligy, just giving first hand what happened, I guess at this point it is what it is, the responsible people will submit and obide by the law, the people who the law is ment to curb will continue. My thought are very clear and I understand all that i post, I dont hide anything from anyone. WE have until jan 01/2012 then this law will come in to affect. I think For the most part many will not be bothered unless you have a neigbor who just moved and does not like crowing, expect a visit from an ACO, I hope it does curb pitting roosters in san diego county, I have been on scene at a cock fighting bust as an OFFICER of this county and it is not a pleasent thing. Best of luck to the chicken community!!. oh By the way I think this may stop the chicken meet ups, if we have more than a few roosters at a specific location, Oh and if you breed a rare breed like grey jungle fowl etc red jungle fowl any rooster fits here, silkie, serama, NN, stocking stuffers you get from IDEAL that you wish to raise for your freezer, all separate counts of this law. IAt the end of the BOD meeting Danielson from DAs went to Bowman at the end of it and told her they will review in a year, you can bet that i will be at that councle meeting and I will speak, and my thought was at that time to be very clear and very direct!!
