You could still do that. make em windows in the double door.

I am looking and thinking this might be my hay storage solution. Bales are three foot wide and two feet deep so I could stack the hay wall to wall in there. I probably could get six bales per layer and go up four bales high that's 24 bales. And I could keep the Daggum Rabbits and Squirrels from eating my hay.....

this would be a good in and out shelter for my goats too.

Sigh I dont have the money either.....

could someone PM me the contact info? Incase someone hands me a wad of cash or I win the lottery.

I forgot to add that they are NOT water proof. It comes in the front and back seams at the top. I found out the hard way when I found a bag of feed wet on the end.

At the very minimum they would need caulking and paint (or snow coat)... and a better solution would be to add an overhanging roof.

LOL.... true.... Just shut the door and you will find the holes. Good sealer and added vents for controlled air circulation and you'd be good to go.... but if you couldn't seal it up the box would be much much easier to tarp than a stack of hay. I go through a bale of Bermuda every two days and a bale of alfalfa every week. I have deer that also get into my alfalfa..... the rabbits gnaw at the strings till they pop too.

I REALLY need a barn.... sigh.

Slightly off-topic, but...

I ran into town and got some hay today. I was talking to a guy doing the same thing, and he was mentioning how expensive hay is predicted to get this winter. (He mentioned $30/bale. I just paid $15.99 for Bermuda.) Anyway, I'm now looking into getting a big load here.

There's a seller advertising an orchard/timothy mix for $16/bale, 100 bale minimum. I'm seriously considering ordering. I really only have great covered storage for about 50 bales, but I can stick a bunch more under the front porch of the barn. If any of you horse/cow/goat people are interested in smaller amounts, please let me know.

I just sent Perchie a PM about this!! Too funny....

Did you go to the co-op? I paid $13.50 for bermuda. Yes, I'm told that prices are expected to reach $19.50 for bermuda and $25 + for alfalfa. I just bought 50 bales and stored them in my neighbors garage. That's a $400 savings for me over the winter months!!

You have to register and they charge you each time you pick up. For example, I have one horse and one pony. I'm charged $1 whether I pick up six bales of 24 bales. Robyn Jackson runs it, her number is 760-877-0124. Open Thurs, Fri, Sat 10-5. It's located at 633 Brazos St. which is down Olive, sort of behind Ramona Disposal...in that general area.

When I get into a real pinch I drive to Seely and get my hay at Tom Brundys. They can get twenty two bales on my one ton pickup. Brundy charges people who drive in the same as he charges the big haulers. Hay here going for nineteen a bale will be around thirteen at his place. He runs his own operation too. And has something he calls discount hay.... Totally good for horses... but its the hay he bales up between fields.... so it will have bermuda alfalfa orchard..... mixed together. Katee Got butter fat on it.

If the hay prices look that high this winter.... Looks Like I need to quit messin around and get my forty foot storage container cleared out for hay. I only have the one horse and four goats.... But Katee goes through a bale of bermuda every two and a half days. Two bales every five days thats about seventy five bales a year.... Hmm Might get a load.

I wonder how many bales will fit in a two horse slant load.

Oh Brundy will give you a quote over the phone or by email... He also carries poultry food as well as dog and cat.....

Is that add on Craigslist? I asked him if he sold in smaller amounts and he never got back to me. I'd be interested in getting some but I only have 2 sheep and don't need very much and other than pallets, wont have much room for storage - so if we can find others to go in on a load, I'd definitely LOVE IT!

The other problem I have is I have a Durango and can only fit 2 bales at a time. No hitch for a trailer, either (YET).

He's on the road to Calexico in the Imperial valley. His address says Calexico but its close to Seely too.
As you go down 8 into the imperial valley take the 98 exit toward Calexico. Look at google maps because the sign is very hard to see.
Like I said they will do a quote over email.

1790 W Highway 98, Calexico, CA
(760) 768-3010

Its ninety miles from El Cajon. So the best deal is to load up. Calculate how much fuel you will spend and see if you get it cheeper than around here.
