San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I just want to let everyone in San Diego that might be looking for goslings this spring know that I should have Cotton Patch Goslings ready at the end of March/beginning of April. If you don't know about the Cotton Patch Goose, its a landrace weeder goose known for it's gentle temperment. If you have kids, this is the goose for you, because they are very gentle and non-agressive. Even my geese that are on nests and their ganders have not bitten me this season, they just honk and hiss at me. Cotton Patch geese are an autosexing breed - males and females are distinguishable at birth. Males are white and females are grey and white. Both males and females should have blue eyes and pink bills and feet. The ALBC website has this info on the breed if you want to learn more: http://albc-usa.org/cpl/waterfowl/cottonpatch.html Anyone who wants some babies, pm to reserve - I prefer to sell in pairs or trios only as geese are social and the breed population of pure Cotton Patches needs to be increased. PM me for info or to reserve your goslings. Reservations require a 50% down payment to my paypal, refundable if I have a failed hatch/run out of goslings to fill orders. Orders will be filled in order that they are received, so to make sure you get your goslings, you will want to get on the waiting list as soon as possible. This year I am expecting between 12-16 goslings, so the numbers are very limited. Here are some pics of my stock which I got from Serina Harvey who took over Tom Walker's flock.

There is a chance that I would have day old goslings I could bring - but I will only do so if people are interested. They are Cotton Patch Geese.

Compost Girl.... you are in Clairemont right? don't assume you don't have Bobcats. The way San Diego is constructed everything is built on the mesas leaving the canyons free for wild life. The one who dug the hole is probably a dog of some sort though.

I definitely do not assume we don't have bobcats, or mountain lions, either. Anything's on the table, except maybe an elephant, though after having an Army tank go down our Clairemont streets a few years ago, I suppose an elephant wouldn't been the wildest thing we've ever seen. My perspective of "impossible" left me after that. If a dog dug the holes in my yard, though, he went over an 8-foot fence to do it, so I lock all three latches on the chicken door every night, just in case. And check them twice.

I do get a bit paranoid about the hawks here. Does anyone have problems with hawks and adult chickens?

We have a ton of hawks, owls and eagles out here, which is why the poultry netting got installed. While I think the heavier breeds fare better, I watched a (not huge) hawk swoop down and pick up one of my full-grown Polish hens last year... that was kind of heartbreaking.

Okay - MODESTO ORDER!!!! My new chickadees are eating me out of house and home: I'm down to a half-bag of chick starter!

I will sign up:

5 bags of soy-free chick starter
2 bags of soy-free layer crumble
3 bags of BOSS
2 bags of whole oats
2 bags of scratch

Only 36 more bags to go for a first pallet...

I'll need at least 4 - 50's (crumble, mash, scratch), if I can get in on this one, but I don't know what the procedure is. Oh - and thanks to the meetup, chick starter. You may all laugh now.

If it's easier to have a dropoff/pickup location for the Clairemont/SD area orders, you are welcome to load my truck up and I'll bring them this way when I get my stash.

Up here in Ridgecrest (Death Valley Area) we have a hugh amount of hawks and roadrunners. Do you know that roadrunners fly ? Just do research and you will see that they are predators and do fly. I have seen pairs of those cute birds on roof tops eying my flock. The birds and my dog alerted me to the problem by making a terrible racket.

You and I both. Of course, it is of my own doing but paying a car payment for feed every month sucks!

With that said. I feel better now. I am in for the next feed shipment. Just have to figure out how to get it. When it is a GO, I will post my order.
