San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

It is very tough and lots and LOTS of red tape to sell at the Farmer's Market.

I get a $5.00 "donation" for the ladies eggs. I was approached. I have heard of getting $6.50 for soy free eggs in a underground market. It is whatever the market can handle. Don't sell yourself short though.

Nancy

There is a local farmer's market and I'm thinking about seeing if they want to buy eggs or trade for goods. What do you think I can get for a dozen eggs from the market itself? I've never done this. I want to be fair but not get robbed. I don't feed all organic at this time, but they free range most of the day so I'm not using a lot of feed anyhow.

I also take donations for eating eggs at $4.00/dozen... I am admittedly kind of psychotic about the diet I feed my ladies, and I have some customers/donors who value that as well...

I was selling fertile eggs for hatching at $10/dozen, and I sold out. (That was kind of awesome.)

Cari - did you add Sara's order to your list? I didn't see it on there; just double checking.

I applaud your enterprise. Taking donations does depend on the market though. Up here in Death Valley the market does not value local enterprises. If an artist is selling ceramics in a very popular venue, the Ridgecrest folks who will not pay the price for an object in ridgecrest but they will pay a greatly inflated price at the fancy venue market just so they can say that they purchased the art work there. It is all about label for some folks. Crazy

I agree - and the market really varies community to community... I think I get $4 donations in part because my eggs are Olive green, Blue, sage green, pinkish brown, welsummer terra-cotta, white and dark chocolate marans. They really like the mixed colors. I make sure each dozen is some of each of those colors and I use clear cartons (which I ask them to return, and usually they do). I just got runner ducklings because I have been getting requests for duck eggs for baking.

I will add that a couple of my doners are very health conscious - one is a cancer survivor, and they really value the freshness and quality of home produced eggs(not for eating, of course).

When survival is so difficult for so many these days I say do what you feel is necessary and agree with Nancy. I am offered the same donation and it helps pay for my feed. Economy and politics are one and the same. I totally agree with "The OCCUPY movement." If you make millions of dollars you do not need to pay taxes and can use your cash to have laws made which help you make more cash. If you survive at a subsistence level as I do you and spend tens of thousands of in interest trying to buy you home at a greatly inflated rate and inflated price according to present market values. This interest that I pay goes directly to those who have more money than they know what to do with it. fubar !!!

I'll add it right under yours... can you double check your amounts to make sure they are correct?

THX!

Our friends and family give us $2 for a dozen and $3 for 18. My son's teacher is a regular buyer...the money from her he gets to keep for lunches or snacks.

Most of my donors are teachers, they seem very open to buying eggs. Ask your kids teachers and ask your kid's teacher to pass the word around the teachers lounge if you need more "donors".

The $ I get from these folks just helps pay for the feed. I don't profit really.
