San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Just got a call from the hospital a little while ago, and she's going to be okay...

They pulled some disgusting nastiness out of her intestines, but nothing had gotten too awful. (They thought they might have to cut out some sections, but didn't.) The good news is that since she did so well, they were able to spay her while they had her opened up. The bad news is that our bank account is now lighter by over $3000. (Choke!) To his credit, my dear, sweet hubby didn't so much as blink an eye when I showed him the estimate.

I plan to have a heart-to-heart with Piper when she comes home about her non-discriminatory snacking habits.

I haven't yet decided if children would have been cheaper than pets. It's not truly scary until you calculate the total spending for the year (our annual record for vet is $8,300 -- dog cancer year -- and I can't say we didn't come close to that in our second dog's-cancer year). What are you going to do when you look at their little faces? I propose a new bumper sticker: Will Work For Vet. Definitely this is one of the things on the "pick a partner criteria" meter, and it sounds like you've got a keeper.

Fantastic news on Piper - what a relief.

My older son is 18 and off at college... I have practically begged him to marry a girl who plans to be a vet. I have a running joke with the horse vet that we made his down payment on a luxe Hawaiian condo.

I am kicking myself for not purchasing pet insurance. My husband has been trying to get the horses Social Security numbers for a few years now so we could at least claim them as dependents.

Farm exemption for property tax purposes? Service animal charitable donation? Very hairy child? I always thought dogs were a very legitimate security expense, so I thought that they should allow it, but the goverment disagrees, for some reason.

Horse racing breeders are a big audit category (used to do tax work), but I don't suppose yours fall in that category, do they (Morgans, I think?)? Kind of like Vegas - they always expect to see a business loss on the form.

My little sister is at the University of Brisbane, vet school, about a year left to go. She has had to work full time while in school, so it's been slower going than she had hoped, but if she comes back here to live again once she gets her degree, I'll have something to offer everyone to trade with, I hope. Maybe I don't hope, now that I think about it. Could be dangerous.

Aww, I love the goat!

My kids will never remember the whole name..... well, I can try. Is she from Renee, or somebody else?

As for my chicks, it looks like I'm getting 50% frizzle, which is expected. I'm really happy with this hatch, they seem to be really strong. My pullets are getting older, so perhaps that has something to do with it. My first hatch of frizzles yielded a chick that looked like a cuckoo, and one with stripes. This hatch from the same parents, I have three that look very similar, and one different, I think two will frizzle, and two will be smooth. Serama colors are so random, you just never know what you're gonna get. Its fun!
Thanks Chaili! She is so pretty and such a love bug! She really loves people. It's funny, now that I am around goats I can tell instantly who was bottle fed as a baby. I want ALL my goats to be bottle fed and I will definitely bottle feed any babies born here. They are just so much sweeter and so easy to work with. Her name looks long but I pronounce it 'Min-yette' so it's pretty easy.

She is from a different farm that was selling La Mancha goats and when I saw her I practically had to beg him to sell her to me.

How did you manage to get a goat with racing stripes?
E
Actually funny story, I was looking for more goats online and ran across that color scheme on a picture and said OOOH! then when I went to that farm they just happened to have one and I talked him into letting me buy her.

I think those colors are AWESOME!

oh cari she is so pretty.that face just want to love on it.
Thank you Renee! She really is the best goat in the whole world, well next to Ghia that is! They both are, it makes such a difference with them being bottle babies.

Anyone going to Norco and has some of their feed order they do not need or can let go of? I dragged my feet too long on the MM order and then Azure Standard had computer/network issues and I could not get my order in. I see a riot in the henhouse in my future if I do not secure some more food.

PLMK.

Oh, Layer crumbles and or Chick Starter crumbles.

Thanks,

Nancy

I haven't placed the order yet, still waiting for all payments... I can spare a few of my bags if you need more I always get extra just in case.

Oh thank god Piper is ok! I used to work at a vet and I've seen some pretty crazy surgeries... it's AMAZING what dogs will eat!
