Fraunie, plenty of crazies here! One of our traditions is that each BYC'er gives the new member a rooster as a welcome gift. Please give us your address so that we can welcome you properly!!

I am new to chickens too, and live in north county SD. I got my chicks seven weeks ago, but they have become so pivotal in my life I can't believe I've only had them that long. Of course I have picked up a few additional birds since the first 7 chicks. So now there are 11 altogether. No one is laying yet, but my first rooster started crowing this past Saturday. I hope he stays just like he is, it's adorable. A creaky, scratchy crow right at 5:30 every morning. He does it about 4 or 5 times, then he takes the rest of the day off. I was going to rehome him, but my neighbors actually asked me not to! Not yet, anyway. They like the idea of a rooster crowing :) But let's see if they still feel that way when either he gets louder, or some of the others start crowing too. I have at least two more cockerels, possibly more. The one that's already crowing is a Silkie.

Betts

1 Silkie, 4 Lavender Ameraucana, 1 Light Brahma, 1 Blue Cochin, 2 Black Copper Marans, 2 Partridge Silkie mixes
1 Demented Pomeranian, 1 Ancient Scruffy Terrier, 2 Chihuahuas, 1 Ridgeback Mix, 1 Boxer who is only temporary (her daddy's a Marine)
1 Teen Daughter (human or anime, not sure which) who has forbidden me to get any more animals

What a kind and thoughtful group....no, really;) I look forward to learning from you guys in every department!! I know our climate and needs are different than a lot of folks here, so it's nice to have a local base.

Betts, glad that the rooster is hanging for now!! I'm a little concerned that one of my Salmon Faves is one....I would love to have a roo, but DH has forbidden it and I'm not sure about the neighbors!! or the hens for that matter!! We have a boxer as well!

I too can't believe how much I love my chickens. Everything about them. And being pretty easy to maintain, and having plenty of space.....I'm curious to see where we end up. I planned our coop PLENty big!

Yeah, that guy behind me can go too."

That is a face (and neck and breast) that only a mother could love... God bless those of you who treasure these naked little beasties!

Fraun, don't give up on the rooster idea just yet :) DH may come around. I got mine to accept having 7 dogs while we still lived in a Los Angeles! Anyway, it will probably really depend on the rooster. If his crowing voice and habits aren't too obnoxious, and if he behaves himself with people and treats his hens well...roosters can be impressive and endearing. And they are so beautiful. I read in another thread some rules for roosters, which had to do with treating them as you would an alpha dog so that they learn their place and don't become a problem. I can search it out if you want me to. So far, my own experience with roos is very limited, but two of my favorite chicks (now 9 weeks old) are quite obviously cockerels, and it's really going to make me sad if I have to give those guys up. One is this guy, Mondo, who is a partridge silkie mix--I just have to keep him long enough to see how
he turns out.

This is Mondo at 7 weeks (he's 9 weeks now), and below that is him at about 4 or 5 weeks, and in the chick picture he's the yellow guy on the right, about 2.5 weeks old. I love watching chicks grow and change--it's so surprising, like Christmas morning every day for the first 6 weeks or so, when they grow so quickly.
