Welcome, Sarah! We're hitting the fair tomorrow. I haven't been in years, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Here's a few photos of my newest babies, two Silver Spangled Hamburgs.

I have reached a new level of insanity. Yesterday I had a start a separate Google Calendar just for chicken hatching dates and ages... I need help keeping track of how old all these different groups are. Pathetic, eh?

All my roos are very very sweet. They do their jobs of Calling out danger when something flies over head. There are a couple of tussles occasionally but nothing too dramatic. I do stand my ground when challenged. Actually I usually ignore em. But being bachelors they seem to have different demeanor than a single roo that has a flock of hens to care for.

Fraun, don't give up on the rooster idea just yet :) DH may come around. I got mine to accept having 7 dogs while we still lived in a Los Angeles! Anyway, it will probably really depend on the rooster. If his crowing voice and habits aren't too obnoxious, and if he behaves himself with people and treats his hens well...roosters can be impressive and endearing. And they are so beautiful. I read in another thread some rules for roosters, which had to do with treating them as you would an alpha dog so that they learn their place and don't become a problem. I can search it out if you want me to. So far, my own experience with roos is very limited, but two of my favorite chicks (now 9 weeks old) are quite obviously cockerels, and it's really going to make me sad if I have to give those guys up. One is this guy, Mondo, who is a partridge silkie mix--I just have to keep him long enough to see how
he turns out.

This is Mondo at 7 weeks (he's 9 weeks now), and below that is him at about 4 or 5 weeks, and in the chick picture he's the yellow guy on the right, about 2.5 weeks old. I love watching chicks grow and change--it's so surprising, like Christmas morning every day for the first 6 weeks or so, when they grow so quickly.

Thank you for all the welcoming messages! It's great to be here. This site is amazing--any question I can think of, I just search it and there are multiple answers from people with actual, real life experiences.

I have TWO broody chickens. Out of 6 adults, 2 are broody. Neither seems easy to discourage.

If anyone has some eggs I can throw under them, I will, but after the stress of last hatch I'm not micro-managing! They can either hatch some fluffy butts or not.

:welcome Sarah! Our daughters played together that day :)

Meet ups are scheduled every few months by whoever wants to take it on. We had one the end of Feb, again in the beginning of June, so we may be ready for one the beginning of Sept.

Does anyone raise meat chickens on here? I'd rather hatch them out than buy from a hatchery, does anyone have any eggs for decently-fast growing meat chickens? Thanks!! :)
