San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Cari, I'm afraid. Have you seen the weather report for this weekend? *gulp* Hot and humid.

I'm such a baby.

I'll be there, but I you may find me hiding out in your fridge.

LoL yes I have seen it. It's been HOT here~ I'm a baby too, so we might be doing a lot of the work INSIDE the houses, with air conditioners ON.

We were supposed to have use of a tractor this week, but it got pushed back, so we might have to push back the setting up of the pens until next weekend. Can't set them up without some tractor work... oiy.... it's all coming SO fast!!!

Just realized that I never responded to your message, Cari... the 11th is the last day we have son #1 home, and we have to take him to the airport in the early evening. We're cramming in all of his favorite last-minute things this week, and wrapping up with his favorite lunch on Saturday. (We won't see him again until Thanksgiving at the earliest, and possibly not until Christmas. Sigh.) You guys be VERY careful in this heat! I just went out to give everybody watermelon and turn on the misters, and dang - it is roasty toasty. Looks like plenty of t-storms over the mountains, too.

My vote for a summer meetup would be somewhere on the coast!

I've never been to a coastal meetup yet, and it would be nice during the blistering heat.

Also - I think I have too many chickens. That is all.

No worries Dana! Have fun with your son!

We will be having some sort of volunteer time every weekend day this entire month if you feel like coming some time, lots of work to be done and not much time to do it! Eek!

I'm really thinking too many chickens. This morning I cleaned and filled ten waterers and ten feeders (not counting the dog, the cat or the horse) around 8 am. It is so hot and sticky already that I was one big Sweaty Betty by the time I'd finished.

I saw Compost Girl last weekend. I miss her quick wit here, too!

I have some excess boys I'm growing up here, and most will be processed. I do have a few who won't fit in my program but are worth a peek, and wanted to list them here in case anybody is interested before I stick them on Craigslist.

#1: Splash Cuckoo Marans - hatched 5/5/12

This guy is on the small side, and doesn't have feathered shanks as per the French standard. He does have the double barring gene plus is splash, so he could he a cool addition to an OE or EE project. (Which is why I'm so tempted to keep him. But do I need another separate pen of chickens?? No.) He is incredibly cute, and does not exhibit any bad behavior. He is one of the low peeps on the pecking order. I so wish this one was a pullet...

#2 French Black Copper Marans - hatched 5/5/12

This guy is actually quite nice. His faults are a slightly twisted comb, and not enough shank feathering. (It's there, but it could be heavier. His full brother and sister have beautiful feathering. I am keeping his blue brother.) He has a nice, plump body and is maturing beautifully. Sprigs (so named because of his leg feathering) is a nice boy, and loves to be held... He is definitely aware of his hormones now, and is the dominant cockerel in his pen. (There are at least five boys in this particular group of 13; I have a few Ameraucanas I'm still not 100% sure which way they lean.) He could be a terrific 4-H bird.

Both boys have been raised on soy-free and organic feed from hatch. They'll be 14 weeks old tomorrow.

I had to remind myself that soon enough we'll all be crying about how cold it is...

Courtesy of the local home owners asoc.**** we have some super nice speckled sussex chicks up for grabs.

They hatched last night. I don't even want to see how nice they look as I won't be keeping them

Also have a few swedish flower hen chicks (and pullets) and some peachicks. Please pm if interested.

I have a Speckled Sussex hen here, and she is the most awesome chicken... she catches mice. And rats. And I wouldn't put a snake past her, either. If I weren't up to such scary numbers of bodies here, I'd be asking for a few of them.

Phage, I'm so sorry your HOA is being so terrible about all this.

Come move out to the sticks where people don't care about crowing, and tend to enjoy each other's animals!
