San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Does anyone have a bag of organic Modesto Milling rabbit feed they can sell me? Or does anyone know where I can buy organic rabbit feed locally? Thanks
You might try calling Ranch Feed in Jamul, or City Farmers Nursery. City Farmers just started carrying organic feeds and their prices are reasonable. He carries both Modesto and Kruse.

Thanks, I haven't seen him since that day, though I've been looking. I'm still going with the thought that Blindy died of old age. I didn't notice injuries (or chunks taken out of her), not that I inspected her closely either. My other chickens have not been harassed and neither have my rabbits, adults or babies. I'll let it be for now, since I have a rat/mouse issue as well.

Also, the weather lately has been very hot, and it can be hard on older or younger animals. The past couple of years when I have lost an older hen, it was during a heat spell. Last summer it was a 9 year old hen, and this year a 6 year old. I think it just puts too much strain on old bodies to deal with old age and the heat sometimes. Young birds also have a tough time of it, hard for them to regulate their body temps.

As for the weasel, they are very timid and you may never see him again. I think sometimes chicken owners would be shocked if they really knew what wild animals visit or live in thier yards..... Have you seen some of the game cam pics people post on BYC? It's crazy!

I lost my oldest chicken - the last of the original four - last weekend. (Of course we were out of town, too; I think it was a bit traumatic for our pet-sitters.) Marsala was a terrific Barred Rock, and I will miss her. I'd post her photo, but BYC isn't letting me do that at the moment.

Dana,

So sorry to hear of your lost. I lost one of my barred rock hens in the heat this summer as well. I don't remember it ever being this hot for so long. El Cajon has pretty much been over 95 deg everyday since early August.

I'm sorry! We did have one REALLY hot day while you were gone.

This morning there was a ruckus in the coops around 6:15. I got up and went to the window that has a clear view--it's about 20 feet from the chicken runs. Standing right in front of the coop, nose to the chain link, was a coyote. I said a bad word, he looked at me, then ran off. I was glad the chickens fussed about it--I was afraid they might just get quiet and hunker down if a predator came. It's good to know they'll alert me. Anyway, their runs were designed with coyotes in mind, but I think I'll still be working on reinforcements this weekend...

Hot wire is a great reinforcement. Teaches em too that fences bite. Coyotes are smart and its a good lesson.

Good idea, thanks!  I have one of those in the garage from a little escape artist dog I used to have... I will resurrect it.
 See, this is where being a pack rat pays off!!

Reminder: Bring boxes to the meet up. Bring a chair too just in case we don't get the spot with tables.
Next meet up: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/707787/details-for-the-next-san-diego-meet-up-sept-30-2012
I still need someone to volunteer to get there early to scout out a good spot and hold it for us.

This is also on the other thread but for those who are not planning on going:

If anyone gets fertile FRESH double yolker eggs in the next week PLEASE CAN I BUY THEM

.

They need to be be less than a week old and have had "lots of opportunity " to be fertile and stored properly.

This is for a scientific study. Can pay $3 each/am negotiable.

Could pick up if you are going to the meet up.

Thanks!
