Sand in the brooder?

Our babies are less than a week old, just 2 so far. One of them keeps getting poop stuck on her butt...not in the vent, just stuck to the fuzz. Just on impulse we put a pie pan in there with some paver sand in it, and they are actually eating it. Should I take it back out? Thank you so much!!

The sand won't bother them! For poopy butts, I just hold them (their butts) under warm running water in the sink, and loosen the poop with my fingers till it comes off, then dry them with a towel, and put them back under the heat lamp.
