Hi folks! Need some input. One of my Marans has been laying for about a month now. Very nice dark brown eggs; sometimes speckled but often not as well and they have gotten larger over the course of time. My concern is that lately she has poo on her back side pretty constantly and today as she was sitting and laying she was making a lot of unusual noise (extremely moreso than ususal.) Well she finally laid the egg and when I went to retreive it it was a little larger than the previous eggs;but my main concern is it is very, very sand papery. She even pecked a hole in it; I assume b/c it was so hard to lay that she was cking to see what it was..:idunno.... and ideas why the egg was so sand papery and why she has poo on her backside ? Thanks in advance for any input :love

A respiratory infection, disturbances that interrupt laying, incorrect lighting, and running out of water can cause rough shells.
None of the above apply; I looked it up and found those as well. Except possibly being interrupted laying; but just not sure about that one. Can't think of anything that has interrupted any of them laying. Not sick, lighting is same as always and I always keep a fresh supply of water for them. This is a 1st and I could tell she was having a problem b/c she was making one heck of a racket today. Thanks for the input!

Well see if they continue. If it's just the one egg, than it could be a glitch in the system. If they continue it still may be a glitch. Sometimes new layers can take a couple of months for everything to get regulated.

Do you offer oyster shells free choice?
