Sanford, NC family fined $1300 day for chickens!Update She Found US!!!

If you take some chickens, just be really careful and make sure they a LEASHED securely. You wouldn't want one of the hens your fighting so hard for to get loose and start a wild chicken chase.

I think that utilizing leashes will help people view your chickens more as pets than livestock. How many people see a child walking a chicken down the street on a leash?

You could also pin some of the hen's ribbons to the harness.

Please test the harness at home. You do not want an untrained bird flopping around on the end of a leash. Won't quite give you the image your looking for.

Make sure not to take any roosters or very loud hens to your demonstration. You don't want to give them fuel for the whole "chickens are too loud". We all know how a terribly excited rooster is.

for Backyard chickens everywhere.

I voted on the TV station site and I wrote a letter to the city. My letter was not nearly as elloquent as some, but I did write it. Drat, I just realized I forgot to spell check it...URGHHH. Here's my letter, typos and all.

Dear Mayor Olive, Mayor Pro Tem Marstin, Councilmembers Taylor, Williams McNeil and Brewer,

Mrs. Reid's fight to keep her pet chickens has garnered national attention, which is how I came to hear for this. She has owned chickens at her current property for more than three years, without the council's notice. This argues that urban chickens do not create a noticible problem with noise, odor, filth or inappropriate behavior.

Many large and small cities in the US allow chickens, and many of these cities are ones that are consistently rated the most livable cities in the United States. Seattle, Madison, WI; St. Paul, MN; Austin, TX; Portland, OR and others all allow chickens.

The reasons for keeping urban chickens are many. These are great companion animals, fun to watch, pet and play with. They provide owners with a economical source of fresh eggs. They allow people to become connect to where and how their food is raised. And in the case of these particular chickens, they provide award winning pets for children.

Well kept chickens are no more intrusive or distructive to a neighborhood than a dog or cat. Well kept chickens will never bite a neighbor's child, rip open trash bags and spread garbage on the street, poop on a nieghbor's lawn, dig up a nieghbor's flower bed, bark all night, or spray urine on a neighbor's front door.

I ask you to please change your city ordinances to allow a limited number of hens within city limits. Reasonable rules concerning number of hens, placement of coops, dimensions of living space and limiting roosters will address all the issues most urban dwellers are concerned with. As an example I have attached a link to my city's ordinances.

Thanks you,

And who says there isn't an international chicken movement happening? This is inspiring the way people are coming together to support the right to keep backyard birds!

We voted for you:)

Alex, I'm really glad you found us and asked for support, because that's what BYC is all about. Way to go!!!! I think the city council has met their match!

Happy 4th Of July. Happy Independence Day!

Today was the first day we did not have coverage in the newspaper, after over a week.

I originally thought this city council just didn't care about this issue. I figured they were dealing with very serious issues and just didn't have time to address this. That is why I did so much research for them, and provided them with ordinances from other cities. Well, of course that is not true. "Pandora's Box" spoken of by the Mayor to me and by Councilman Man was opened and revealed by councilman Brewer. What ever their personal prejudices may be we may never know. And we wont be able to bring them to the forefront. We can, however, request and demand that the Council provide a few answers. Why was this put on the books? Were you involved? Why are you not considering my suggested regulations?

This may seem weak. But it is the high road approach. And it is an election year for several of them.

So please in any of your additional communication start asking "why". Put them on the spot to answer for "Pandora's Box."

Also, with regards to the coverage in the newspaper, please keep your friends voting on all three sites. We need to keep the medias attention on this.

Last, I have to go to SC for a few day (My Dad had a bypass). I will have computer access but not as much time on it.

Keep it rolling. You guys are great. And thank you very much.
Alex
