S/he was in the container of pullets being sold as a sapphire gem. The coloring was that of a hen but now I see some rooster type feathering in the tail area and I could've sworn I heard crowing this morning!! Is s/he a rooster?

Yup he is a cockerel, I don’t know how but out of 3 saphire gems that were supposedly pullets I got 2 cockerels!
Thank you so much for your quick response. I am so sad, this was by far my favorite chicken but it started showing some aggression whenever we came near. My husband kept swearing it was a rooster but I kept hoping otherwise...

Cockerel, yes....saphire gem, no.

He is not a True Sapphire gem as his dame should have been a Cream Legbar and he in turn would have been single barred. He seems to be an Isbar cross cockerel
Where did you get the idea that sg are legbar crosses? Sg are a brown laying hybrid

Sapphire gems are a hybrid cross of a barred rock type and splash andalusian type.
Being a cockerel he should be barred but these birds are from Hoover's and they don't have the recipe right.
Sapphires are a hybrid with the legbars and leghorns. Different hybrid completely.
Never heard of a sapphire OE but with what you're saying I'm betting it some type of sapphire gem/legbar cross. Are they also from Hoover's?
