Sapphire Gem thread!!!!

No we don’t have a rooster so my buff’s are sitting in nests that don’t even have any eggs. We honestly were going to get eggs because one of them was broody before but then she got out of it, and we didn’t know if she’d take them then, so we ended up getting the new five and then the buffs decided to go broody after the babies are too big to give them. Also my splash is 4, got those in 2020, they hatched that July the label said. The gem with bright red comb and wattles was squatting today when I went to touch her also. 😄 yay 🥚
Ha! Silly buffs. Speaking of buffs I saw a lot of them at the livestock auction I went to today! They were really cute. I got my first chickens in 2020 also, but sadly I only have 3 left from the original 8 that I got. That's really cute how your gem squats when you pet her:lol: mine don't. They just waddle away when I try lol.

1. How long have you been owning sapphire gems for?
I got my Sapphire Gems from TSC April 27, 2024. They were actually a mess up. I sent my husband for Starlight Green eggers and he came home with them. Lol

2. What would you rate them on a scale through 1-10 and why?
10 for sure, out of all the different breeds I have they are the sweetest and calmest of them all and love attention from people.

3. What's your favorite "trait" of your sapphire gem(s)? (e.g. their egg laying, their temperament, etc.)
My favorite trait would be their temperament of the hens. I don't have a rooster of the breed so I'm not sure how they behave. My daughter usually always has one or two of them she's carrying around the yard all the time. They absolutely love her.

4. What do you keep them for? Dual-purpose? Eggs? Meat? Pets? For pets and eggs?
I keep them for eggs and pets.

5. Would you recommend this breed to other chicken keepers?
Yes, I would definitely recommend them to others.

6. How many sapphire gems do you have?
I have 4 pullets 😊

7. Would you consider getting more in the future? Why or why not?
Yes. I would definitely own more in the future. They are the best girls.

Some pictures of my girls ❤️🐔

I'm happy I found this thread. I've got 5 supposedly pullet chicks. They are way to young to tell at about a month old. I couldn't turn the close out deal down at a $ each for some very healthy looking chicks all feathered out a little.

hi do all the males have light legs ?
I'm pretty positive, I don't think females would have yellow legs unless it's a mix....But don't quote me...I might be wrong 😅 Although when I did a search on google of sapphire gem hens, none of the hens have yellow legs; they all have dark gray or lighter gray legs, and the cockerels and roos have yellow legs🙂

Sapphire gems are sexlinked so you can even tell the gender when they first come out of the egg🙂 That's a deal that I wouldn't pass down either! Now, if you have chicks that are (**usually**) light gray with a white spot on their heads and have yellow legs, those are males. Darker chicks with dark legs without a white spot on it's head are females.
Hope this helps!😊

I'm going to look at them really close but I don't remember spots on any heads. One is a very dark gray and the other 4 are a lighter gray.
