Saved some ducks, have a few questions.

I'm getting really frustrated (and I'm sure this is due mostly to lack of sleep). He has his strength back, and he's super vocal, and his appetite seems to have gotten bigger, he's drinking great, he's lifting his head and neck to eat and drink on his own. There's really obvious improvement. He's obviously annoyed he's stuck in a little box now...but he's still flipping over, his neck is still just hanging there and twisting under him when he relaxes, and though he can stand, he still can't walk.

I'm glad he's feeling better, but I just want him to get well enough that he stops flipping himself over, until then, he needs round the clock care.

Also...what's the risk of overdosing on vitamins? I know Iron is an easy one to overdose them on, and the poly-vi-sol is without iron. I'm wondering if I can concentrate his vitamin dose and start giving him a lot more. I don't know if the extra will be good for him, or make him sicker.

Some vits are water soluable other not and those are the ones you have to be careful with, one reason I like to use what available for the species Poultry Nutri drench is awesome It can be given straight into the mouth [not down the throat] but goes straight into the blood system so it gets to helping alot quicker that adding just to water.[add to water also] Some Feed stores carry it and TSC. Are you putting him in a donut shaped towel for over night? this will keep him from flipping or should. At least your seeing improvement that's a great sign hopefully the rest will happen too. are you doing neck massage. that may help too.

He's in a tub just barely wider than he is, "tucked in" with a sheet at night. But he's big and strong enough that he stands up, and over he goes. He is still getting neck massages, and I spend time holding it straight. We also put his food and water just off to the side of him while feeding so he has to straighten his neck to eat.

Which is so weird he *can* straighten his neck out to eat, drink, or hiss at the dog. But when he tries to walk or just relaxes, his neck is incredibly twisted.

I just wish I had more experience with this stuff. Google only goes so far.

You guys have been great, thank you.

Is there a light on in the room he is in? maybe he wouldn't get up as much if it was completely dark. of course you have probably tried all these things.

How long is he to be on the Rimadyl ?

Yeah, it's dark...we have the tub in a cat carrier (I say cat, but it's more like small dog) and cover the carrier with a blanket (I had a parrot as a kid, it evidently works for ducks too). He only flipped himself over once last night...that's either a huge improvement or I got a lucky night.

Not sure on the Rimadyl, I'm suppose to call the vet next week and possibly take him in again, depending what is going on.

I hope you can get some sleep, your doing an awesome job caring for him and I know I've said it before but you know many wouldn't go to this length to care for a duck. .

I'm so ****** at whoever dumped them off. I want to find them and wring their neck! Probably told the kids they were bought for as tiny babies, the ducks would be all happy and live with other ducks. But even if we lose this guy in the end, at least the other is safe and can go to a happy home.

Haha...sorry for the language evidently! It started with a "p" and ended with an "issed". I had no clue the forum would asterisk it out.

That's okay it happens frequently.
I think people say this to make themselves feel better about dumping, hang around on here long enough and you'll see after Easter.

We just got back from the vet. Things took a turn for the worse suddenly this afternoon and we rushed him in. We all decided that letting him go would be the best thing to do. I'm heartbroken, his sibling is a mess, and my daughter is trying to cuddle him to calm her and him down. I wasn't prepared for this after his improvement.
