Saxony Duck Thread!

Pics
Hi, maybe you can help me. I bought my ducks as ducklings in March, thinking they were all Peking. The girl became brown and I think she is a Saxony (see pic). Anyone confirm that for me please? She also has had babies with our Pekin Drake, they are a week old :)

Nope, not a saxony. She is a buff Orpington.

My duck Pearl is a buff Orpington
I was told she was a pekin also

And it's pekin, not peking. Peking is a famous duck dish lol

Thanks for that :) now I know what breed she is.

Oh and the spelling for Pekin...auto correct changed it to Peking, I hadn't noticed that it had done that lol

Yes, they can mate and will if given the opportunity and biological function. It's likely a pairing that will produce fertile offspring since both are mallard derived breeds, though I'm not sure why that would be a good thing.. especially when talking about Saxonies. The breed isn't exactly prevalent and purposely cross breeding them means that the offspring won't be Saxonies and doesn't do anything to preserve the breed.

Preserving breeds is a great thing and I am all for it. However, having mixed duck is ok too. It just depends on what you have ducks for. If you want to preserve a breed then you should like, stated above, keep to that breed. If you want to sell ducklings of a certain breed then you need to stick with that cretin breed.
However, if you want to try and increase your Egg laying ability in your ducks, have ducks for pest /bug control's or say you have only been able to get different breeds of duck and want a flock without buying other ducks. Or just want them for pets or to use them for meet or eggs, it is not nesacery to stick with a pure breed unless you want to. There are some fantastic mix breeds out there.
We all have different reasons and situations for owning ducks and that's fine.
As long as our ducks are happy and healthy we should respect each other in our individual duck choices and lives.
