Scabbed lump on the back of my EE

I have an EE that is less than 6 months old, not laying yet. We noticed a couple of weeks ago that she has a lump on her back, near her wing. We haven't been able to catch her until today when she was allowing us to pick her up. The picture is what we found on her back. We put her in a cage on our porch with plenty of water and food, which she gladly accepted. My question is, should I open this up and see what comes out? The lump extends under what we can see. I have the tools (I am a nurse practitioner) including 18g, 22g, 28g needles, scalpels, etc.) readily available.

I think I would with your experience, as I would wanna make sure it wasn't a nasty infection raging underneath. Puss in chickens tends to get hard and become lumps that must be excised as they don't simply drain.

For future reference, it's easiest to catch a bird for inspection or treatment after they have gone to roost in the evening. Using a flash light or head lamp and keeping it dim almost always eliminates any chasing as they birds will stay put because they cannot see well in the dark.

Hopefully it's just an old would and no cause for concern.
