Scaly Leg Mites - Need Best / Easiest / Quickest Solution - Scaley

You can try an oil that doesn't need to be repeated so often and has a more long term effect, like the castor oil. It's amazing how well it clings and doesn't wear off. And it has an insecticide action as well, so it smothers and prevents re-infestation. It can be found at any pharmacy and even at Dollar General. It also is working well for folks as a dewormer, so handy to have around.

The old scales will eventually fall off and new, supple scales will replace them if the mites are truly gone. The castor oil should do the trick!

Thanks. I'll look for that at that the store. I tried vaseline for a few nights but what a mess. I gave four hens a bath today to try and clean them up. Now I've been dipping in olive oil and blotting off the extra. I'll keep doing that till I get castor oil. I wanted something safe in case they ingested some.

I think I got my castor oil at Walmart.

Okay, here are some more pics of my light brahmas legs. Scaly leg or not? I have a show on 8/31 that I want to bring her to so if this is scaly leg I need something fast and nothing that will damage her feathers on her feet. Thanks!

Yes..they look like they have mites. I don't know if you can get them looking good by the 31st but you can try the castor oil~it seems to offer the quickest road to good looking feet...the only trouble being that the feathers will be greasy looking for awhile, but they can be washed well before the show and the castor oil should only enhance their quality. Be liberal in the application and massage the oil well into every aspect of the foot and push it under the raised scales.

Keep us posted?

Note: You might go ahead and treat all your other birds with the C.O. as well just as a preventative, if they don't already have the mites.

I'm two weeks into treatment and my hens feet really look great. I rubbed them with vaseline a few times but that was soooo messy. So I switched to dipping their feet into a small tub of olive oil. I'm really pleased with how well they look.

I read that the life cycle of these buggers is three weeks so I'll go one more week and then really scrub out their coop and hope I got this one nipped.

works, great huh? I did the Castor oil thing, and they still look good. I think my Hens thought they were having a spa treatment...LOL

All but one hen objects. And it's my BIG Jersey Giant. She would prefer I not pick her up. So when I lowered her into the oil, I think she thought I was going to set her down and when I didn't she struggled and kicked and scratched me. It didn't break the skin through my jeans but it left three 6" long bruise scrapes that look positively awful. Thank goodness I can cover it up or everyone would want to know how on earth I got those marks.

Explain that to a complete stranger that your pet chicken did that to you.

This weekend I'll scrub out the coop from top to bottom and hopefully, that's that!

Last night I gave another treatment to Betty, 2 1/2 yr Barred Rock...She did best after the foot soak in the sink. I used a Dawn soap on a nail brush and scrubbed legs and toes and then put her on her side with a towel, wrapped and pulled each leg up so the Castor oil would flow easier into the scales and then I massaged it in really good. This morning she gave me a kind of weird look like what the heck happened to me last night? LOL

My birds always look like at me when I mess with their bodies! I never touch them except at night, pick them up, turn them on their backs and cover their faces with a towel they are lying upon and proceed to look them over, or massage oil into their feet. When back on the roost they always shake their feathers and look at me like , "WHY?" with this look like they have been thoroughly assaulted and have lost all trust in me.

The next day they are walking about on their soft and supple legs like models on a runway.....

In my head I can hear, "I'M too sexy for my feet, too sexy for my feet,....."
