You are the blessing, my dear! Such a funny, sweet spirit...very rare nowadays! The Pyrethrin should be at Lowe's or any garden center. Don't make the mistake I made once and get the Permethrin powder instead...it's the synthetic version of the pyrethrin and does the same job but is just the more chemically form of it... not biodegradable and though I know we've probably eaten a ton of it because they use it on commercial crops, no need to put it straight into our food supply.

I have an online friend that has those large dogs and she abbreviates their breed name Pyre or something like that so I thought, oh I can remember which P word because of Marilyn's dogs.

Bee I'm afraid I have a sick chick, one of my BA's. I am ALMOST positive it is the SAME ONE I thought was missing! I thought something got it but when I let them out a couple days later and got them back in the pen there it was, all 23 black chicks. Don't know HOW it survived with no food and water outside the pen. This morning hubby counted them and saw that there was 23. This was yesterday that I let them out....... Anyway I could hear it breathing tonight and it was whizpy sounding. I went to that side of the roost to see which one it was and it was the BA. Wanted to pass this by you and see what you think about it. I found this info some where and I don't remember where I found it but I like natural so I cut and pasted it just in case. Don't think its yours because I labeled all I cut and pasted of your info. Anyway this was the info.... this is what they said about their chickens. I'm only hearing the one doing this but thought this might be something I might need to do before it gets worse. ????

respiratory infection that affected my entire flock.

They were all very sick with thick mucous discharge, severe lethargy, wheezing,
and coughing. Also the discharge had a very bad odor. The roosters where unable
to crow.

I researched remedies and posted on one of the threads for ideas of how to treat
my chicken family.
In the end I decided to try the natural approach because the antibiotics that are
available seemed to be a little dangerous if not given right.

The natural approach worked great!! So I want to share it with everyone.

This is what I did:
Crushed ( 7) 1000 mg vitamin c tablets.(one for each chicken) added two to three
tablespoons of cinnamon to the powder and mixed it in chick starter. I put the
mixture in their food pan. I also added electrolytes to their water.
Their symptoms improved the 1st day and I continued the above regimen for one week.
Every one recovered fully!

I have to add that after the 1st dose of my mixture all of the chickens where
acting normally by the end of the 1st day! The roosters were even crowing normally
again. The congestion and mild sneezing or coughing continued for 3 or 4 days
however the congestion no longer had an odor and was mainly clear discharge.
After the 5th day all symptoms seemed to be gone but I continued the treatment
for 3 more days just to make sure.

If anyone else has used this method to treat illness please let me know.
I am curious to see if it was just a fluke or if it is a great home remedy.

That wasn't my remedy...I've never had any illness in the flocks of that nature. I'd just monitor your chick for now and see how it goes. Any number of things can cause wheezing...a dust bath, allergies, etc. If it gets worse or doesn't get better in three days, then I'd try something. I have a three day rule...usually anything I notice going on in my birds is gone in that time, so I don't worry about what it was.

Keep us informed about this chick...have you checked its body to see if it has any injuries from its little jaunt away from the flock?

no I didn't think of that! UGHHHH

I was just so glad to have it back! OH man I guess I need to go see if I can check it now since it's on the roost. These BA's don't want me touching them at all! Sure am glad it's close to the end of the roost so it will be easier to get at. Now how do I check it, what to look for? This is a first for me. I tried a few days ago to check for mites and stuff and I can't find any skin. lol only feathers every where! ughhhhh hard to find the base of the feathers with squirming birds.

It is VERY VERY hot here right now. in the 100's on the heat index. like 105 tomorrow. Going to say a special prayer for my BA tonight and hoping it gets ok. I can't stand to see something suffering.

It wasn't lying around or anything today. All of them were up rooting around and then all of them were resting in the heat of the day and stuff. I was busy canning salsa so I couldn't let them out to free range until this evening.

That's how I do it when it's just me working the chickens...that towel comes in real handy as a helper and you can even use it to bundle them if you are working on something that requires both hands. Any chicken that gets too wild, just hang them upside down until they settle down and hang still, then start all over.

Just check it's body for puncture wounds around the chest and neck...on a black chicken, I know that can be hard but it's worth a shot.

I'll tell you an easier way to check the skin...get yourself a flat surface, lay down an old towel and lay that bird on its back and just flop that towel over its head and hold onto the feet. They struggle less if they cannot see and they struggle less when laying on their backs..then just lift up those legs like you are changing a baby's diaper and with the other hand ruffle through the feathers around the vent and lower abdomen when checking for mites and lice.

ok I just came back from checking it and it's still spunky. lol I also put a band on it's leg so I'd know which one of them it was. I couldn't see anything or tell anything was wrong with it. In fact it wasn't breathing like that this time so maybe it was just the chops I'd given them this evening or something. Maybe it just didn't drink enough water. It's little crop was mega full. lol it was hard.....is it suppose to be hard like that?
I checked it's neck and didn't feel anything swollen and it looks normal in size.
