Scaly Leg Mites - Need Best / Easiest / Quickest Solution - Scaley

I wouldn't treat the birds for mites or lice unless they actually have lice or mites. If your birds have good places for dusting, it's likely they won't ever have anything like this..who knows?

For many a long year I never had anything like that in my flocks, so I never had to ever think about mites or lice, and then I got back this old flock and they were infested. Then I had to come up with some natural means to rid them of it. Normally, I would cull any bird that showed a repeat occurrence of anything that is detrimental to their health but this old flock of mine was just a project I took on...I guess because I felt so bad about what had happened to them when not in my care. So, I chose to treat them and keep treating them until they were no longer tortured in this way.

That was one of the reasons I placed the wood ashes on them and into their dusting places. Then I went looking for info on natural treatments in case that didn't work....the sulfur dust, the pyrethrin dust, etc. were the results of that research but I've not used the sulfur on the birds, though I did try the pyrethrin once and it finally did the trick and I haven't seen any problems since then. I keep checking, but nothing new.

I have used both ash & sulphur for many years. I put the ash in their dust bath holes( winter here, so plenty of ash ATM ), and the sulphur I sprinkle under the hay in the nest boxes and behind them. I know that the sulphur works because when our herd of angora's first arrived here they were covered in lice. I invested $30 on Pat Colebys ' natural goat and alpaca care' . The information in this book has been most helpful and in some cases life saving. Sent the lice packing.

OK will check their vent area and in and around that area and see what I find if anything and THEN I will put it out IF I find anything. I/we made their other roost today and still gotta figure out one more thing and just where to put it, a ladder.....I thought I put it in the right area BUT got out there and had 3 trying to roost in the run again and then 2 on the floor of the roosting area. One of the board was only half full but they couldn't get at it because it was blocked in front with chickens and the ladder was half full of chickens to. lol

Is this scaly leg on my brahma hen??? I have also heard of something that looks like scaly leg but is just heat exhaustion. I live in Texas so is this a possibility? Thanks, Preston

Been treating my BO for scaly leg mites for about 11 days now. What do I do now? I see pink new scales on the more delicate parts of her legs. Obviously her thick scales are still thick and raised. Do I need to keep oiling up her feet until the thick scales fall off and new ones grow in? Or have I killed the mites and will new scales grow in eventually?

You can try an oil that doesn't need to be repeated so often and has a more long term effect, like the castor oil. It's amazing how well it clings and doesn't wear off. And it has an insecticide action as well, so it smothers and prevents re-infestation. It can be found at any pharmacy and even at Dollar General. It also is working well for folks as a dewormer, so handy to have around.

The old scales will eventually fall off and new, supple scales will replace them if the mites are truly gone. The castor oil should do the trick!
