We have one, but am not even sure where it is located on the property.

Did they clean the filter? We had to have ours pumped within days of moving into the house. It was filled with grease and other things that shouldn't be in there. A month later it was full again. Called a different company and the filter was just clogged. They showed us how to clean it. No problems since.

Different states are going to have different requirements for septic systems.

My feeling is that your leach field has failed. Its time to get someone out there to find out what is going on. Although one other possibility is that the drain pipe leading from the house to the tank may be broken.

Again it boils down to getting a professional to examine it to find out what is going on.

I didn't know there was a filter and neither company that pumped it out mentioned a filter. I can believe the leach field may not be big enough for our usage. Clearly something must be done. I just don't know what.

I would ask the company if you have a filter on not. My old one did not have a filter but my new does. Not all systems have a filter.
