School closed early today!

I wasn't told anything about why it was closed except heat and the air quality was so low, it was accually bad for you to breathe outside. It's the worst it's been in ten years. Kids were having asthma (sp?) attacks left and right. I think that is why it was closed and not just becuase of the heat.

The reason our school board does not start till then is.... 2 reasons actually

1) wayyyyy back in yester year... the kids were needed at home on the farms to help with the harvest... during the march break they were off for a week to get the fields in... and off from June 30th (aprox) to do farm chores.... most of the fields are being cleared this week

2) disease spread very easy in the hot weather

I'm amazed the air quality was that bad. Maine isn't known for bad air is it? Last time I was there in 1992 it was beautiful. It's amazing the way the climate is changing everywhere. Here in Colorado it has been really nice. Hope it stays that way.

Neither of my grandkids--one in Rochester, other near Ithaca--nor locally starts until Tues. Never saw the sense in starting then stopping for Labor Day weekend. Maybe the kids in Orange Co are slower?
