As a retired educator and one that has done a lifetime's worth of research into teaching and learning, that is a dumb idea with no particular advantage to the child's learning. It's just a smoke screen that makes the school district look like it's doing something worthwhile (read "makes the administration look good"). If they were going to open before Labor Day, then they should open on the Monday before and give the kids a full week.

Our schools opened Aug 23rd. They do this to give themselves extra days for snow. We are very rural and the school has no bus system. All the parents transport their own kids and get reimbursed 17 cents per mile. There is a lot of wind out here and when it snows more than 2 or 3 inches , the drifts can be 2 to 3 feet. High enough that most 4x4's can't get through. Therefore we wait for up to 2 days for a plow. No school on those days. If the snow days don't get used, the kids get some extra learning.
