School fundraisers??

Personally, I look forward to those little catalogs hitting my desk. I just ordered a pumpkin roll and some cookies with molten fudge inside.

These fundraisers are to help the school afford extras, mainly because education has been budgeted out of each and every state.

I would.

I thought that was why parents buy unneeded objects for fundraisers anyway. Most don't want cookie dough, after all. They must know that they are indirectly donating to the school. So, how could just writing a check directly be any different?

Maybe I am just odd.(very possible)

HAHAHA! I just saw this. I think I said the same thing more succinctly.

Basically in Michigan, our property taxes go to the schools.... and a percentage of our state taxes. If you look at the Detroit public school system or the Flint Public school system you'll see the graft and corruption I am talking about. Every state has their own formula on schools budget, and I gotta say, Michigan's should allow us to have the top of everything. Even our state lottery goes to the schools budgets......

Probably different state by state, but I gotta tell you.... The private schools here in michigan.... I feel for anyone who goes into the teaching profession in the public school system. The teachers are behind the gun, are the 1st point of contact from angry parents, and have almost NO say in how the money is spent..... Then there is the No Child Left Behind....

The dumbing down of America has started. I'm sorry if you disagree, but I couldn't be a teacher. Don't want to be, and couldn't be because I will not be held helpless in a system that is questionable..... and touches so many of our kids.

obviously by my handle i am a teacher...the fundraisers we do are fo special things only. We still take our senior class on a trip...we went to Myrtle Beach couple years ago when it was my turn to be sponsor. Elementary uses the money to buy books for the classrooms and such...we only get $3000 per child from the state. Doesn't go far but we make it work. Our FFA chapter is mostly funded by fundraisers, and we are blessed to ahve a great lady running it.

About those out of state seminars...we are going to them...got a grant...worked our butts off getting it...they made stipulations about how we could spend it and so much had to go to teachers...we collectively gave it back. Last year we took the entire high school to Wichita, KS and this year we are going to New Mexico...trying to show our kids there is more out there and get them dreaming.

Don't ask my wife how much I spend on my room and kids...there is always a pencil and paper available...and calculator...and a snack after school..and...

Rural America still has great schools and teachers that love it...get away from the concrete and come visit...we are down to 94 kids pre-K to 12.

And that is a school system I would be proud to send my kids to! I don't think you should have to spend your own money on supplies.... but I know a lot of teachers who care..... they do. I do a lot with our schools, and I know most of the faculty by name. I have too many kids in the high school not to. But its my elementary and middle school kiddo's that are killing me with the cookies, fudge and Christmas ornament fundraisers. Their last field trip was to a McDonald's for being on the honor roll.

I am jaded to a degree. I'll admit it.

I started to read this thread, but gave up after the first page. So if I'm repeating someone I'm sorry.

I'm now going to out myself. I'm the current PTO President of my kids school. In that position I will be kicking off our school fundraiser this week, we only get 1 per school year. This is the only way we have to make money to support the teachers and staff that work hard to teach our kiddos.

Here are just a couple of examples of how we are hoping to use the money that we will earn this year.
We will get a new to teaching teacher a book purchase to start a classroom library.
We will be buying healthy snacks for MAP and STAT testing weeks
We will have a day to celebrate our local veterans. The students will be using this as a service lesson with PTO support
We will help out with the classroom parties by buying snacks since homemade products are not allowed
We will help out in the outdoor classroom
Bring in outreach programs that will assist/reinforce the class lesson
We will be celebrating our 5th graders with a BBQ as the year winds down and they are preparing to enter the middle school

These are things that will never be able to get into a the tax supported school budget. Before making a decision about the fundraisers get involved to see just where the money will be spent.

Even if a child only sells 1 item they will get some sort of prize.

When I first moved here I would get 1 child from across the street come to the door fundraising. After a couple years I asked some of the other kids why they didn't come to my house. They told me that the parents on the street had split up the street among the kids. When I told them it was OK I got a lot of calls from parents asking if it was true? Lol, I was a hero to that crop of kids cause I would buy from all of them. They all got prizes.
Now they're all in HS, very cool and barely talk to me. I notice there's a new crop of little kids now.

Imp- When I was a kid, I was in scouting and we sold door to door back when it was safe. Another scouts mother was in charge. I was first place at $400 (and that was $1 items) The other scout came in second at $300. My prize was a cheapo plastic camera that didn't work. Her son got an expensive camera. Hmmm, quit scouting about a week later.

My daughter's Girl Scout troop picks a charity to donate part of their cookie drive money to. They picked the local volunteer fire department, so they got to go over there and give cookies and their donation to the firemen at the firehouse.

That and a badge for their vest was enough.

This year they have the teaser "entered into a drawing to win a laptop" stuff. Oh well, time to teach the kids about evil marketing people.
