Today is a half day of school. Praise the Lord!! I am so ready for them to get out of the house. But I found out some things while there.
#1 they are charging the kids who drive $10.00 a year for a parking permit, but not the teachers. That doesn't sit well with me the teachers should pay too.
#2 they made it a smoke free campus. Now that I understand but we are in tobacco country here. It seems to me(yes I am a smoker) that they are treating tobacco as a illegal substance. I wish they would focus more on the real illegal substances out there. They are getting this thing backwards in my opinion. After all, tobacco raising has put many a country kid through college etc. Plus the principal at our school thinks that if you smoke you are a bad person and are going to hell. Smoking doesn't make you a bad person, if it did then I know alot of bad people who had better pack their eternal luggage for the unspeakable.
Just thought I'd vent a little. Gotta go get the kids here in a minute. Anyone else got anything to add, go ahead on. I just don't want this post to turn into an arguement like some other posts have done.

I'm excited about school starting, too. My kids are angry that I am so happy

I don't mind the teachers not paying parking fees. But at our school kids can ride the bus and I think the fee helps encourage them to do so. I HATE getting stuck behind a line of teens all showing off their cars or goofing around before school!

Leaving the tobacco thing alone. I don't smoke but know people who smoke and people who grow. We all need our vices, and freedom of choice. Mine is chocolate... and also banned at some schools!!

I'm not excited at all for school to start. My son starts kindergarden, and I am going to miss him so much. I know he will do great, but I LOVE having him home with me.

You go to school too!?

I do too! Where do you go and in what grade are you.Or are you in Collage or something?
Or am i mistaking you with your kids??
Annette.

COME ON TUESDAY HURRY UP!!!!!!!

I'm jealous, I wish my kid's school was starting sooner. Ours doesn't begin until August 27th. I was hoping that our district would go for "year-round" school. My 15 year old even wants to go year-round, my 11 year old says no way. The 11 year old only likes recess. lol

I graduated in 1990, I remember having to pay a $1.00 for the parking permit sticker at the beginning of the year. I guess inflation has brought the price of a sticker up quite a bit since then. The teachers at our school had their own parking lot in the front of the school. I never even wondered if they had to pay to park or not. I guess that's one of those "Perks" they get for teaching our youngins.

As far as smoking goes, I use to be a smoker, now I'm a quitter. lol It was really hard to quit. My kids say that they won't touch the stuff, but I said the same things to my parents.

Our campuses are completely smoke free.

Wow, that is early!!! My daughter graduated college this spring so it has been a few years for me with the first day of school thing. School does not start here until after Labor Day!!!!!

Yeah, school doesn't start here till after labor day. I can't imagine it starting so early! But... we did get out really late in June...

The school rules and regulations there are interesting to me.

As for parking permits, when I was in high school it was 15 a year.. or was that quarter? I think it was year. I think it's fine students had to pay. I think it was good really. Buses here are paid for by tax dollars and driving students created a terrible hazard on school grounds. Like me! The fee went towards the security guard who watched our cars during the day. (High theft area) We had a sheriff spend lunch time monitoring the parking lot too so kids would be more tempted to obey the closed campus rules. I think it is fine that teachers didn't have to pay and had their own parking lot because some of them had to drive 30-60 minutes to get to campus, while all the students at our hs were within I believe 5 miles of the school... pretty high density housing in some areas so our school was packed!

As for smoke free campus, great! Although, if students chose to smoke, give them a designated spot near the edge of buildings or something. I guess WA state has stricter smoking laws though. There is no smoking in all buildings or within I think 25 feet of doors or windows of any buildings. On our university campus, smoking is only allowed at designated smoking spots. Granted, I don't see the outdoor smoking rules enforced. The inside ones are.

Our scholls start 27th of August

We had to buy a parking permit to be allowed to drive t school I think $5 but also had to bring proof of insurance, and have a permission slip from parents. That way they had a way of taking away your driving priviledges if you misbehaved, doing donuts in the gravel lot etc........

It seems to me(yes I am a smoker) that they are treating tobacco as a illegal substance. I wish they would focus more on the real illegal substances out there. They are getting this thing backwards in my opinion. After all, tobacco raising has put many a country kid through college etc.

How old are your kids? Federal law says no tobacco sales to minors, so unless they are 18+ it is a illegal substance. Law says no alcohal under 21, so just because we have a beer distributor which has put many kids through school too, I dont want my kids drinking in school either, its either illegal or not there should be no grey line if it is illegal they should not have it on campass. If it is a colledge campass Dont know what to tell you. Dupont is a business that has banned smoking at all of its facilitys, your choice is dont use here, or find a job elsewhere, so if yur kids can't handle not smoking while on campus enroll them at a school that allows it.
