School hatch Now Day 21 Peep peep peep!

Aw, hope this hatch goes better. I really didn't know what to expect today so I'm thrilled. The kids are really excited too. They're bummed that we're all going on a field trip tomorrow and won't be there to keep an eye on things. I've created a bunch of hatchaholics!

oh my gosh - you are spreading hatchaloicism to kids

Number 4 didn't make it and no more have hatched but the first three are doing well. They were in the feeder dish chowing down when I got here. My student and I are not going on the class trip after all due to the extreme heat and he is the only student here above grade three so we are giving chick tours. REALLY spreading the chick love!!

We're done at 4 hatched, 3 live chicks. They're already a little bigger this morning, very active and cute. The kids are absolutely thrilled with them. Yesterday my student told 4 different groups of younger students about the whole process. He really got a lot out of this!

That is great!!! I find, being from the city 30 yrs and now raising chickens for the last 4-5 yrs, I've learned alot. I feel responsible to tell everyone what I know/learned about chickens. lol. Some people just don't get it and I look like the crazy chciken lady!!!! LOL!

Did you guys crack open the remaining 4 eggs to see if they pipped or developed? I had a few eggs this weekend that piped but didn't hatch and couple that were upside down in the shell.

I'm too squeamish I'm afraid. If I'd had someone else to look I would have but no one was willing. I am sure that the one white egg I though candled clear must really have been clear. I expect the table got bumped or something. There were no signs of pipping on those four at all.
The three chicks already have the beginnings of wing feathers. One has the cutest yellow spot on its head! I'll take more pics tomorrow. It was a not so good very bad day today.

I don't actually crake them open, but you can make a little hole in the in the air cell, just to make sure your not throwing away a chick that was a little behind, I almost did it once. When I hatched eggs in my school, and I will never do it again, there were about 6 different classes in that room every day and ther were kids shaking the table opening the 'bator and everything. Out of 30 eggs, one little dominique hatched. And I wasn't at school when she hatched and I came in to the teacher with the top of the 'bator off for over an hour

The one with the yellow spot is probably the dominique/polish mix. I'm so excited to see them!

This was a fifth grade classroom and the kids were told to keep away. But I'm sure there was some peeking and checking anyway. The table was in a quieter corner of the room. I'll send pics of the babies along tomorrow if I survive another stupid day.....
