School hours..

I teach High School in Texas and have done so for 15 years. Public school is not scarey at all in my opinion. You have to deal with everyone in society to a certain extent and better to do so at a young age, just my opinion.

The school day for our students goes as this......I coach as well so I know what the athletes in extracurricular's hours are. We start weights at 7:40 for 20 minutes, then have practice for an hour 1st Period and then they have 30 minutes to shower etc. Regular classes start at 8:00, for those that dont have athletics in the morning. They have 38 minutes for lunch and then they have a homeroom/study hall for the second lunch. Class day is over at 3:25, we start practices by 3:35 and usually done by 6 pm for the students. We are on Full Block schedule also. Hour and a half long classes, 4 each day.
Another nearby school doesnt start classes until 9:30 and finishes at 4:00.

I lose track of how many school bus drivers are nailed for driving while under the influence.

I went to several public schools, in different states growing up. Every single one of these schools had some pretty terrible teachers. They called their students stupid, among other things. I had many young boys ask me to do terrible things, in grade school. Unfortunately, the bad teachers outweighed the good ones.

I am very happy to teach my baby boy at home where I know he is safe and getting all the attention and teaching he needs to succeed in life.

I'm happy to see people teach their kids at home. Just as long as they are actually teaching them!

Unfortunately, I know some people who "homeschool" their kids and at eight years old, they didn't even know their alphabet. No learning disabilities, just a lazy mother.

No drunk bus drivers in my area. Haven't even seen one in the news. Gladly the public schools you went to are the minority of all the public schools. (unless my schools are the minority)

Hi, we have about 5 hours of school a day. It's about how many hours we have, and not about the # of day's around here.

We start at 8:50 and get done at 3:20 we have recess (20 min) and Lunch(40min) Grd. 12 can get frees if they don'y need the extra credits.

I went to publich school for 10 years and it didn't kill me. Life was rough at times but it was important to learn how to deal with people/teachers you didn't like and how to deal with a situation that you are in. I think it is an important for anybody to learn this. There will always be somebody at work, within the family or elsewhere that you cannot stand but you need to learn to get along and make the best out of the situation.

This is just an example from my side, no generalization whatsoever, but all the home schooled kids I tried to recruit for farm work failed miserably within a few days. There was no common sense whatsoever when it came to how to do chores efficiently, when to ask questions if you don't know anything, or even how to make their own life easier (What, if i have a flat tire on my hay wagon, you say I need to fill it with air? Why? What could possibly happen???) They lacked important socialization skills, didn't want to listen to any well meaning advise we gave them, etc. We had really been looking forward to having somebody that was homeschooled from a farmer family work on our farm and were quite disappointed at the experience. We tried it a couple more times after that but it just ended up wasting too much time on our end

I do sincerely hope that our experience was just an isolated case. It does sound like the OP has a great opportunity there.

My older kids have school from 7:45 to 4 pm. Plus after school activities.

No, I don't home school. Please. I'm a HS grad, that's it. My kids are so far past me in school it's not funny. Plus, I've never met IRL a home school student who was polite, well educated and ready for adult life away from parents. They may be out there, I've yet to meet one.

I'm in my last year of highschool, I have some courses that I take before the actual school day begins so I'm often at the school by 7:30 and out at 3:30. Theres a 1 hour lunch break from noon until 1pm and about 20 minutes worth of breaks between classes. Plus homework after I get home at 4:30. Generally I do about 6-7 hours of school per day.

Where did you go to school???

None of that stuff ever happens here... at least where I go to school. I would hate to be stuck at home with my parents all day long.
