Actually, the hen is the one who determines the sex of the chicks in avian species. My Ellie throws almost all pullets, while Georgie throws more cockerels. Meg's kids are about 80% cockerels, which is why I have never gotten a Meg daughter, dang it. I don't really buy the time of year scenario.

I have read that on BYC several times. I have NO IDEA if it is true. But I use ACV anyway for all the other good reasons,
and I do always seem to get at least 60% females, sometimes 70-80%, and that is from a lot of different hens and breeds.

Apple Cider Vinegar. The one with "the mother" in it. I get unfiltered organic ACV at the grocery store, Spectrum brand.

Shadow laid an egg today, her first in maybe 7 months! She'll be 4 in April, hard to believe, little lavender Diva chicken.

Yay for Shadow!

I would love it if my FussyButt would still lay one every now and then. But at just shy of six years old, I think her time of laying is way behind her now.

The commissary used to carry the Spectrum brand of ACV. I loved it. The price was right and it was every bit as good as the more expensive Bragg's brand. I suppose I'm going to have to whine to someone at the commissary about that. Didn't someone around here have a recipe for turning plain old filtered and over processed AVC into the organic type with the "mother" in it? I'd love to have that formula. I could buy three gallons of the regular stuff for the price of just one quart bottle of the Bragg's brand.

That stuff is just higher than a cat's back in these parts. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why!

According to
https://www.earlmay.com/media/cms/Moonsigns_2012_72BAC205DBD2D.pdf

Below are the best dates we’ve determined to
perform a number of activities using the
Llewellyn’s 2012 Moon Sign Book. Choose the
date that is best for your weather conditions.

Take a look at that document. I know my parents and grandparents sure did believe in doing things "by the moon." Heck, it's worth a try! Here are the egg setting dates:

Egg setting dates: January 2-5, 7-9, 25-27, 30-
31; February 1, 4-6, 21-23, 26-28; March 2-4, 24-
27, 29-30; April 1, 5-6, 21-23, 26-28; May 2-4,
23-25, 30-31; June 1, 19-21, 26-28; July 19, 23-
25; August 20-22, 30-31; September 16-18, 27-29;
October 15, 24-26, 29; November 20-22, 25-27;
December 17-20, 22-25, 27-28.

However, I found that book online with preview pages (not all pages), and I wrote down the "hatch dates." They do not coincide with what Earl May's setting dates on their document.

Best dates to hatch (go back 21 days for the date to set chicken eggs) 2012.....
January 7-8, 16-17, 25-26.
February 4-5, 12-13, 21-22.
March 2-3, 11-12, 19-20.
April
May
June 1-2, 9-10-11, 19-20, 28-29.
July 7-8, 16-17-18, 25-26-27.
August
September 1, 9-10,18-19, 27-28.
October 6-7-8, 15-16, 24-25.
November 3-4,12-13,20-21, 30
December 1-2, 10-11, 18-19, 28-29.

Kathy, at the end of today, I have 13 eggs. I think only one is GJs, but one puzzled me today-I think it was Ida's, though, not GJs. Anyway, hopefully, a couple more will be in the collection by tomorrow evening when I pack them up for you.

Here is Hector's sister, Miss Nutmeg. Funny how he looks like daddy and has his blue and red coloring but she looks like....well different. Notice the soft feathers between her toes. LOL
