Cyn....so sorry you lost another girl

Taz - prayers for you and your family, I know God answers prayers

We are home and STILL headache free.....that you guys so much for your thoughts and prayers concerning Colby. He seems like a totally new child.

Seems like "chicken troubles" are contagious. Since Saturday morning, right after the BIG STORMS here, Rex, the BR male I got from Cyn has not been right. When I went to let everyone out Saturday morning Rex took forever to come out (letting he and his girls free range). He was kind of lethargic all day. I was out there all day cleaning pens, limbs, etc, etc and around roost time I noticed his comb was a bit purplish. I've isolated him and have been babying him all day. He eats and drinks, but his comb is still not the proper color. I know this is typically a sign of improper/not sufficient blood flow. He's had a few dosings with the vaporizer with oxine in in....so far I haven't seen any improvement. I wonder if its possible that the storms scared him severely on Friday night??!! I'm at a total loss as to what to do. Anyone has suggestions??

Cyn - I feel soooo bad after your giving Rex to me that he is in this kind of shape. I have over 100 chicks on the ground, 2 coops full of CRs and the coop Rex is in with his girls. ONLY Rex is affected. I really feel as if I've let you down and I am terribly sorry.

I'm doing everything I can, but if any of you have suggestions PLEASE let me know

Scott, I'm so sorry. Olive oil helps a lot with circulation, so maybe biscuit or cornbread or oatmeal with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in it.

Cyn - certainly not your fault. I will make him a biscuit or oatmeal in the AM and try it. He and I have been back on "buddy" status as he loves when I bring him a peanutbutter sandwich!! Typically eats it himself and doesn't share much with the girls so I know he likes it. I just feel like I've failed somehow and darn sure cant figure out what I've done or not done......dang, dang, dang. Just hoping I can get him through this. He is on the roost in the coop I have separated in, not on the floor, so perhaps he's perking up a bit

Scott, sometimes, you just can't figure what the heck is going on. You know how I baby my flocks, but just the same, things happen we can't control, like Gracie dying today-we fought for her for two months and lost. Zane had an almost stress-free life and he died suddenly, too. He just died. That's all. Nothing I did or didn't do as I did everything for him and he was very well loved and cared for and he was happy as a chicken in his position could be.

The same thing could have happened to Rex here. Roosters die of sudden heart attacks all the time. I just hope he sticks around so he can father some chicks with those new baby pullets you have growing out!

OH, forgot to say, yea for Colby!!

*** I meant pour the oil on the biscuit or oatmeal, not bake it inside. Sorry not to be more clear. Their combs get bright red within a little while, usually, almost "glow in the dark" red.

ME TOOOOO!! His "kids" are doing great so far and looks like 5 pullets and 1 cockerel, but really hard to tell exactly. I wouldn't feel so bad about this if it were my own birds.....but you trusted ME with Rex and I just feel guilty I guess that I've fail you and him. Just pray I can pull him through. I have a friend whose son is studying to be a large animal vet at Auburn and I have asked him if he'd ask his son to call me tomorrow (hoping to pick his brain and perhaps get some access to one of his professors)

Scott....I sooooooooooooo understand how you are feeling but Cyn knows you take good care of your birds so you stop worry about that. Focus grasshopper. I will tell you this...Mr. Fluffy has been acting similarly since the storms but he seems to be coming around now. I am sure with stuff blowing around and possibly banging on the coop, he is just stressed out, they do stress, especially when they cannot see what is happening. Mr. Fluffy is a young man too so keep doing what you are doing and give him time to settle down.

I just spoke with Knox and he is okay. He should be checking in tomorrow or so, just a busy weekend with friends in town visiting. So call off the search dogs Amy. :)

WOW....they have great barring even at 9 weeks!! Right now my Rex babies are just over a week old and still just lil' black fuzzy balls (butterballs).....no feathing yet at all

They are in a brooder by themselves so there is no competition for food, space or warmth.....I cant wait to see them grow up. I want some "big bootie girls" like Cyn has

I think my Dottie x Rex baby is a cockerel. Stan will probably get his Stukel line males from halo since she is closer than I am, from what he said on the Plymouth Rock thread.

The reason I think it's a male is that the comb is prominent, the down isn't dark black, the legs are not extremely dark all down the front, just splotchy. Time will tell, of course. I'd love to have a BR rooster in the main flock with Ike, but I cannot see Isaac accepting a barred male into his flock with the way he feels about the barred hens. I hope he would, but I rather doubt it. Guess I could try it and find out, but I just set more eggs this morning and hopefully, in this other bator, I'll have a better hatch and get some pea combed kids who can go into the main flock so Maretta's baby won't have to go it alone. Right now, those two, who are both Rex's kids, are the only LF chicks in the brooder of 12.

I'm watching the way it walks right now. The hock isn't turned, but it seems "loose", like it's hard for the chick to control it. Could be he was just crammed into Dottie's small egg pretty hard and needs 24 hours to get his land legs. One of the D'Anvers has a slipped tendon and will most likely be culled tomorrow. Cute little thing, so I really, really hate that.

Ok, first, I am going to apologize that you may see this posting more than once.

My mother-in-law is in the hospital. She has been for a few days. She is REALLY sick. Today I found out what is all going on, and they are still doing more tests. She has blood clots in her lungs, with pnuemonia, and her heart is only outputting 14% (not sure of terminology) and they did a CT scan of her chest and found a HUGE (their words) mass in the center of her chest that is pushing on her lungs and heart. They are still running tests to find out if the mass has spread to other parts of her body, and are taking surgery. So we will be making a trip to Texas tomorrow morning as soon as I can rent the car.

What this means is that my chicken stuff is on hold. I have my parents coming over to take care of everything, and there is a lot of that stuff going on, with eggs in the bator and chicks in the brooder, but I wanted everyone to know that I plan on getting my swap eggs out on time, and meeting up to get eggs, and swap pea chicks and pick up chicks.....But if I can't do it on time, I will make it right.

My email addy for BYC goes to my cell phone and so if anyone needs to get in touch with me, please send me an email. I get the PM notifications too, so you can also PM me.

Thanks for understanding.

I'm sorry about your MIL. I hope there's something they can do.
I know what you mean about leaving all kinds of chicken stuff going on. I am going to Texas this week for a week and I am leaving eggs, chicks, chickens, pullets, and a new roo all for my hubby to take care of. Thank Gawd he's already involved with them.
