I'm not retired but taking a siesta right now from nursing. This is the only forum/website I keep up with. You just get used to some people, you know?

Chicken people are more interesting than most.

I like to help people who are newer than me with what I can. This is a good community.

My DH and I are both retired. He does keep me in line some. He is always reminding me I would rather be with the chickens. What the heck, I'm an old mother hen... (He is out every day giving them treats too. lol)

Looks like this thread is dying without Speckled hen. It is sad. I sent her a card but I don't think I'll hear from her. I think of her often. Wish there was something I could do.

Anyhow, I've Del eggs in the incubator for this years hatch. I think I'll be growing these out but not selling them. I don't know who the dad is since I've got three roosters in the mix.

1 NYer, 1 from MO, and 1 from GA, (out of eggs from Speckledhen). They're are great layers, Dels.

Scott if you read this the CR's are laying.

Well take care everyone,

Rancher

Crazy emu lady. Crazy chicken lady. Heck, just a crazy lady! It could be worse.

I am gettin' the itch to start incubating. Soon - very soon!

The 7 emu babies are growing already. I will only keep 2 or 3 of them. I will send in the samples for DNA testing next week, to get them sexed.

It is suppose to get above 50 here today. I am happy to hear that, as I need to get outside and get some work done. I do love it outside.

Yes, Yes,Yes,

You're getting ,itchy,Itchy, you're getting very, very itchy, LOL. You can tell that I want chicks. Only, I want Dels, Old German New Hamp. and Silverlaced Wynd.
My own eggs are growing yeah! I am at day 11. Mostly Wheaten ameracuana and EE's and possibly an olive egger or two. I can not see into the marans eggs with my flash light to tell.
Why do we not hear from Cetawin and Speckedhen anymore? somehow I have missed it. I miss them. Gloria Jean

You can do DNA testing on them? Can you do this for chickens too?

Probably. I suppose so.
With emus you have to wait about a year before knowing the sex (from the sound of the noise they make). That is one reason for the DNA testing. A chicken - well, you would know in just a few weeks. You can check HERE.

I suppose it might be nice to be able to tell how closely the lines of specific breeds are with a DNA test.

I am trying to not get too impatient and candle some of these eggs. There are 50, but I expect much less when I candle. I have a light on in the coop now and the orps and CR's are laying again. Most of what I have are Birchen Maran and Dels in the incubator.

I did get an egg from the BR's finally and expect if I put in a light there too, I will get more. I've been opening the run door so they can go out and get some sun. Direct sun is much better than the filtered stuff through opaque plastic I think.

The weather here is supposed to warm up a bit to the 30's. That will be nice.

Kathy I have to ask. Is there a reason for raising Emus ? Other than the fun of it I mean. Will they be on the dinner table or served in some fancy restaurant that I can't afford?

LOL, Emu roast??? Emu Fricassee? Emu Marsala? Unreal. The only other person I know that has an Emu or more is Chickenzoo.
Cmom, I know what you mean. My DH is out there longer and longer. He has a shelf in the pantry for "his" treats for "his" girls. When I had the flu last month, he surprised me with 3 Polish appearing on my patio to say hello. Oh yea, he retired a few years ago, got bored and went back to work full time.

Me? I'm in between jobs. I resigned my last job because of a few disrespectful occurrances from administration. I'm done working in hospitals. I'm looking for a different aspect of nursing now.

No wonder I spend my time in the backyard with the chickens or the barn where I keep my horse. They love me

I think SpeckledHen is taking a prolonged break. I don't think it was easy being a mod for 60,000+ posts in 5 years. Hopefully she is well, and will come back to chat sometime.
