Thanks for thinking of Zeke - I hope to hear something tomorrow - I have NOT let DH know what the vet said yet, as this is going to crush him. Thought I would let him hope up until the last minute, if possible. Kathy, you are right, he is like our "kid", and it's going to be hard to lose him, whenever that time comes.

Beth, sorry to hear about Zeke

Wyandottes are on my list right after either Barnies or Partridge Rocks - which are right after the "New Indian River" project birds! Now that I know how fast DH can dig post holes, I have all sorts of plans. I just have to figure out where the septic field is.

The soonest I could find out about Zeke would be today, but I think it will be more like Monday. DH has it figured out, I can tell. He had a Bassett years ago that had the same thing, so he is putting two and two together. It is VERY hard to see a big 6"5" guy with tears in his eyes- Zeke has been there through a lot of stuff with him. I will keep you all posted, thank you so much for prayers and thoughts!

Cetawin, are you all better? How is that mouth?

Forgot to mention, last night I unwrapped my bumblefoot girl's foot. It does NOT look very good. I left it unwrapped.....will have to do something with it this weekend. There is obviously still infection in that big swollen area on top. The swollen area on the other side is completely back to normal and the bottom of the foot looks pretty decent. The top part I had cut into looks horrible. Sigh.

A warning about bumblefoot surgery that I've never heard anyone else offer--be very cautious doing anything like that during a molt. I lost one girl who was molting and also had a reproductive infection that we did a normal, easy bumblefoot surgery on. We weren't aware of the egg issue at the time, but her system was already depleted and her foot went necrotic. It wasn't a hard surgery, either, just like all the others we've done, one of the easier ones, in fact. Had to put her down.

I never cut across the foot pad, just around the scab. And I try to avoid cutting into the top of the foot, though sometimes, you almost have to do that. Janelle, do a long soak of her foot in epsom salts and warm water. If you see something immediately below the surface, you can make a small poke so the ointment can get in there, slather it with antibiotic ointment, wrap and be sure she is pretty immobile in a cage or something. Give her extra protein for the time being, too.

This hen is in dire need of a molt but is not molting now. She is very raggedy. All my girls got over-roostered last winter into early spring.....the molters are looking great now, but the ones who have not molted look gross. She is still laying her giant white eggs nearly every day. Got another one yesterday, plus the one the day before.

The area where I had cut in has black tissue around the edges and in the flap. I assume I need to go in and cut all the bad areas off. Soak thoroughly (before or after?) and slather in antibiotic ointment and then change the wrapping often. Halfway tempted to inject the LA200 directly into that area.

I have a bunch of eggs that need to be scrambled so I will put her on that for now. I usually feed my girls 20% gamebird "breeder" but they have been out, so I had to switch back to 16%. I am making a food run this weekend and they should have the 20% back in stock so she will switch back.

I feel bad for her, having to get poked and picked and cut on repeatedly. I wish I had noticed it before the bumblefoot got so bad to begin with!
