Last year I drove the firebird instead of the truck one day. And the weather took a dive midday.....I tried to go up the hill to get to my house and made it within about 20 feet of my property line.....and then just started sliding sideways instead of forward. I had to slowly back down the hill. Which involved a lot of sliding backwards towards ditches and fenceposts. The hill is steep so I would get going fast while just "rolling".....but if I braked I would start to slide. I had to alternate rolling and sliding to stay on the road. No way can I get a sort of light rear wheel drive sportstype car with big wide wheels, up a big steep hill in the icy snow......

I have a 4x4 truck but I am from southern california so have no idea how to drive in the snow. I am better off staying home. If I even made it to work, I would be expected to do everyone elses' work TOO and stay late to make up for it. Screw those bastards. Let's not even get into the "christmas bonus" drama of last week. Needless to say, I will not be risking life and limb or my car's health for that place any time soon.

LMAO Nella I am a native Floridian and had never driven in snow until I arrived in Germany in the 80's. I learned to drive and countersteer on water, hurricanes and such in south florida. Snow/ice and hydroplaning on water are not that different at all. LOL.

But I will not go out unless I had to in this mess...my backside will be home tomorrow.

Yeah, you all better stay home. I, on the other hand, need to go out ..... and start job hunting.

My vacation is over. Time to go back to work.

Nella, rule #1 in sliding downhill on snow and ice. Drop down to your lowest gear. Even if you're driving a 4WD automatic. Drop it to the lowest possible gear you can get it into. This slows the rate of drive to the wheels, while at the same time maintaining your ability to control your direction. Never EVER hit the breaks when sliding. You'll only make matters worse for yourself!

DH has already gone to bed or I'd be picking his brain for more good winter driving tips. He's a native of Wisconsin and knows all about driving on ice, snow, slush....you name it. Wanna know where he first learned to drive? Out on Lake Winnebago, in the middle of a typical Wisconsin winter!

Talk about learning to drive on ice the hard way!

Oh! I just thought of another good one. Carry a bag of the old fashioned clay kitty litter in the back of your truck. Not the scoopable stuff. That just turns slimy when it gets wet. Clay kitty litter gives you great traction if you're already stuck in the snow. Like when you're trying to get back up that hill to your home. Spread some kitty litter on the ground in front of your wheels [front wheels for front wheel drive cars and back wheels for rear wheel drive] and then gently let up on the breaks. Don't give it any gas as you'll only spin out. Again, use the lowest gear.

I'll natter at Denny tomorrow for ya for some more great tips! In the meantime young lady, you keep yourself warm and safe at home! No company and no paycheck is ever worth your life!

Kathy! NOOOOO!!! Say it ain't so!! Who am I gonna have to talk to all day??

You really should give it one more week. Let all this cold and treacherous weather move out of your area. In the interests of safety of course!

Thanks to Janelle for my first laugh of the day:

Everything seemed fine, so in the house I went. Frankie goes out with me on these nightly excursions, just in case. If I slip and fall, he can lay next to me to keep me warm LOL. I would take Molly but I think she would let me die and then eat my corpse. Little monster.

So would the chickens, come to think of it.

We have about 3" or slightly more and it's still coming down. Tom is all on his own caring for the birds since I won't risk going down the snowy hill and he won't let me, either. The hardest thing is to have to get Nugget off her eggs, put a warm towel over them, and encourage her to drink. She usually drinks fine, but she's being obstinate right now. And she won't poop in the coop, at least she hasn't yet--she won't do it till she goes outside. Outside has no visible ground and she doesn't need to get her feathers full of snow, either.

And thanks to Cyn for my first laugh of the day: I'm visualizing Tom with Nugget held out in his hands and encouraging her to "do her business", suspended above the evil snow!

Somebody out there has all of my beautiful snow and I want it back right now!!!! Was it y'all in Tennessee? Or maybe the Missouri people are hoarding it? I know! It's those crazy folks down in Georgia who didn't even want it in the first place!

See all the girls inside looking out? The rooster flew out and up to the fence. I was impressed by his flying prowess. He never touched the snow.
