I'm excited....I have needed to downsize for a long time. 50 is a good number for me. Between my mottled cochin pen (1 rooster, 6 hens) and any future breeding pens (olive eggers! 1 rooster, 9 hens) I should only have about 30 birds in the big coop/yard at a time. That is a great number for this property.

Well I plan to downsize but not til the young ones get closer to laying. I have about 10 two year olds to replace and some roos to process. Maybe just do them all when the processor calls. Lord let it be soon.

NELLA! Congrats! Wow, you weren't kidding about downsizing!

Well, I'm coming back from TN tonight, and little did we know, we've had over ten neighbors coming over and taking care of the pets and our house since we've been gone. How sweet! On the other hand, they brooke out refrigerator- LOL, but they're so generously fixing it.

My boys are why I haven't had a predator loss so far, not in the five years I've had chickens. First it was Hawkeye, then his son, Dutch, plus Isaac and Suede. A good rooster is worth his weight in gold.

What good boys! I am selling my head rooster with a trio of girls.....back to his previous owner actually LOL. I am a little concerned about losing him as head roo. Last time I sold a head rooster I had 5 hawk losses in the next 2 weeks. Fortunately, I'm still dealing with that same small hawk and now have all free range bantams sold except 1.

So here's the plan and I need some advice. I plan to buy some orps from Jody/hinkjc and I plan to go and pick them up or Trylin will go. I was thinking of asking if there was anyone else in NY who wanted to buy chicks and I/she could pick them up and then they could pick them up here. Of course they would have to prepay for their chicks to her. With the price of gas I just thought it would be a nice thing to do. I would print out any correspondence between me and them.

So lets have someone play devils advocate and tell me what pitfalls there may be and how to avoid them.
