I've noticed a lot of roos have the darker area to the back of the comb. I saw a pic on here (byc) the other day and noticed that. And my big blue barred roo had the same slightly dark area just in the back. He is fine and dandy and I attributed his to the heat....it comes and goes as well. I figure when they are standing around in 100+ temps, wings out and panting heavily, strange things may happen. He won't leave the girls so sometimes gets run ragged around the yard if they split up and he has to check on them all.

Maybe he did pick something up off the ground at the swap. I'm sure he isn't the first chicken on the ground there. I have had cocci in one of my big brooders here before, so usually do a dose of corid at a younger age if they pass through that brooder. I am almost positive that he had a dose when he was young and living in the big pen out back. Hopefully it is just that! I will have to take a close look at all my boys combs tonight just out of curiousity. I tend to ignore any minor comb issues in the boys, since I have multiple boys in the yard and in neighboring pens and sometimes they like to, uh, "argue".

On a sidenote, you definitely got the prettiest boy! He has the best beard. I used to call him BlueBeard

He and the green banded boy were my original "boy keepers" before I changed my plans. I ended up keeping a younger one who was really badly picked in the rooster pen and is half bald (sigh). He lives out in the big yard with the girls and is filling back in now.

He is certainly a handsome thing...and so very sweet and playful. When I was giving him vitamins from an eye dropper...he looked at it and held real still. I put a little on his beak for him to taste and then he drank it out of the eye dropper for me. Just a little sweetie that boy.

Well I took pictures in the rain so the hens look pitiful. But I think the rain actually helped to bring out the color on the back better.

Honest input needed. I have thick skin.

Germaine, all I can say is those are some dirty girls! Mine are just filthy right now, too. Looks like one is too darkish in the hackles, probably daughter of Georgie, who is really more laced than barred, though she is barred, too.

Ladyhawk, if I really do decide to let Ike live elsewhere, he would go live with you, if you still wanted him at the time. The women, who knows? They still pick at him and Georgie stalks the boy.

Told Tim this in a PM:

We have a logger coming out tomorrow to assess our extra three acres, to see if it's worth buying the trees. We do have large oaks, maples and sourwoods, plus others, but he only pays $5/ton, probably pocket change. It would make a mess, but give us firewood in the slash he leaves, and clear the view for our satellite dish, plus give us a year round view of two mountains, which should also help in selling the place. Year round views sell much more than seasonal views here. If I have enough to get someone to pull the stumps, then my nextdoor neighbor has a tractor and attachment to till and rake the whole thing for us.

I am glad Spike is better- he is such a cutie!

Cyn I would take your Del girls in a flash. I think Luke could keep them in line- he is pretty strict with his girls- do you have two or three left? Once I move Ultasuede out of there, there would be room in the Del coop- he is the size of three hens. Plus if I get a certain MO roo, he needs women. If you REALLY think you want to do this, rest assured, I will take them and take good care of them, but I am betting you are just hot and tired and still heartsore after losing some of your girls.

Germaine, honestly, I think the girls in the first two pictures have that columbian influence going- their hackles don't look right, like Cynthia said, unless they are just mushed together from being wet. If they are good layers, keep them, but you may not want to breed them on. I have one that is worse than yours- my dear Lizzie. She lays well, so she stays, but I am going to experiment and see if Luke, who is too light, can lighten her markings in their offspring, if not, she stays in a layers pen.

LOL Cynthia, yours are the white ones for comparison (even though they are wet and sandy right now) The first two are the ones in question. When they are dry the hackles look great on your girls.

Beth--Thanks for the honest truth. I am selling off some hens so they are going!

Cyn, you know Ike and those Orps would always have a home with me. Never worry but notice I called to talk you out of it. LOL I also wanted to make sure you had my list. Remember I am a chicken thief and cannot be trusted near handsome sweet roos and problem children girls.

ummm Germaine my bladder would have exploded before I attempted that one I think. Your Dels look like mine...dirty dirty girls.

So, the first two are not from Isaac? Okay, the one in the first pic on the left looked darker than Georgie, even, so that makes sense. Whew, I'm glad the others are Ike girls. How is their tail black?

Beth, if I decide to let those three go, they're yours. Isaac would live with Ladyhawk.

Cyn- Okie Dokie.

If someone with more knowledge than I have feels like being merciful, please go over to the Del thread. Cherylcohen, who is very nice, posted pics of her hatchery girls and one has what appears to be a split wing. BUT I had a girl who looked like that for a few weeks and then it molted out. PLUS I think her hatchery stock is not bad looking, but I don't want to lead her in the wrong direction- you all know I have not the knowledge the rest of you have- if you don't want to post there, you could always PM her. . . . . .
