Maybe....if I knew what went in to making a black sex link!
I know, I know: I'm incredibly pathetic, ain't I?!?! Don't even know which two breeds are used to make a black sex link!
Sheesh!!
Cyn, I absolutely LOVE your SOP!! How about adding that all roo's will not crow until after 9:00 am and then only for one hour?!?!
I have an announcement to make!!! [aahemmm! aaaahemmm!!! **clearing throat**] After nearly 4 and a half years of waiting, I caught Brewenna in the act of laying her egg!!!
FOUR and a HALF YEARS! I've been waiting to catch that lady in the act of laying her egg, and today it finally happened!! [that bore repeating!
]
I have always had my suspicions that she is the one who lays the mondo huge egg, but today I finally got irrefutable confirmation of that with my own eyes!
It was so funny! Rosie was in the nest box next to Brewenna. Now, I was pretty sure that Rosie was going to lay hers today. You can always tell when that silly girl is up to egg laying by the way she struts around the yard for the better part of a half an hour, announcing to any and all her intentions to do so!
So, while I'm in the coop doing the morning clean up, Rosie comes in right behind Brewenna and picks out her second favorite nest box. Brewenna had already beaten Rosie to her favorite, you see. And Brew is a really big girl! When she makes up her mind about anything, Heaven and Earth cannot dissuade her from her intentions! Certainly no 3 or 4 pound scrawny year+ old BR hen is going to tell Brew where she's going to lay her egg!!
Well, I kept an eye on them as I worked, and listened to their little back and forth conversation from the two nest boxes. By and by, Chief and a handful of the young girls came wandering in. I think they were entertaining notions of playing house in mind. [somebody is going to have to explain this behavior to me later on! Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing?
] But when they see that their favorite boxes are already occupied, Chief backs off, and so do the young girls. Chief then comes over to sit next to me where I'm plucking piles of poo from the shavings. That was a nice respite from poo picking! Just a few nice minutes of cuddling with Chief and watching Brew and Rosie!
I so love that boy!
Anyhow, after about 15 or 20 minutes of watching, all of a sudden, Rosie stands up, arches her back and plops out a beautiful and respectable sized egg. Who would think such a nice egg would come from such a scrawny little girl? And then, right on the heels, and I do mean
RIGHT on the heels of Rosie's egg, Brewenna stands up, gives three mighty heaves and pops out the mondo huge egg!!!
Finally!! FINALLY! After four and a half years, I've gotten to see my sweet Brewenna's miracle as it happens!!
This is my big girl Brewenna, taken last winter. She's even bigger now! All of that good wholesome free range time and warm oatmeal/veggie breakfasts on cold winter days [as seen here!] pays off ya know!
In case you couldn't already tell, Brewenna is the one on the right in the foreground. Yeah,...the
BIG girl!
It would be wonderful if that girl ever went broody. I swear there's enough room under her for nearly 2 dozen eggs!
