No idea what was up with Ike this morning. Dutch even would call the babies to eat, as would his daddy. Wonder how Suede would be with babies? Well, Nora and Panda are smaller hens so they'll probably enjoy the rooster-less environment, seeing as how Ike is so heavy. Tiny would be better off somewhere else, too, but I don't know if changing her environment is good, with her eyesight being so awful.

My boys have always been good with the "younguns"....even if they were not raised with them. We have strict rooster rules here LOL. I've got 11 backup roosters waiting in the wings in the rooster pen and brooders. If the "big boys" screw up, it does not bode well......they seem to understand this and behave themselves. Me dropkicking them across the yard if I catch them doing something bad probably helps this along

I caught my younger blue cochin rooster doing the treat cluck this morning for the girls....he is really coming along well. So much better type than his dad, nice and solid, nice personality.....a little rough on the girls but he is going through the hormonal teenager stage and is nowhere near as bad as some other boys I've had. And he doesn't fight with my evil bantam mottled cochin rooster.

Roosters are just plain weired. Just about the time you have one figured out they will act the opposite of what you thought. I have Stormy in by himself now. I can not let him back with the hens. There are 6 new ones in there plus the 8 older girls and he was trying to kill all the new ones. Not just mate , actually trying to kill. The girls get along fine. Now what. He really throws beautiful hens for me.
What to do now. ........... Gloria Jean

Cyn, I have kept my broodies and chicks with the flock and up until this last chick getting wounded have had no problems, which is why I think the wound happened accidently. Nick, Georgia boy and Lavender Blue dont' seem to concerned with chicks. Nor do the other hens and young roos.

I'm glad cuz I have no where to put them other than the coop.

It rained again last night and must have gotten windy cuz it blew the tin sheets I had laid over the run all over the place. One was on the ground. I have intentions to screw them down but was hoping my SIL would do it. He did the first three. Will post pics.

Well take care folks, lots to do , places to go, people to annoy.

Love ya all

She is my totally worthless slaughter rescue. I bought her off the internet from another state after seeing her picture. She was about 8 year old, Quarter horse or Paint (or cross) mare......I've had her almost 5 years now.

Her first internet slaughter photo

So pathetic.

Here she was the day after I got her home LOL.

She is actually VERY SWEET....she is also insecure and lazy. Was not even halter broke when I got her and had LOTS of issues. i had her in training but they were unable to ride her and refused to try after she dumped them a few times (she was a bit scary).

Here she is her first time trotting under saddle. I'm the only one who has ever ridden her.

And then she bucked me off on a hard dirt road and I broke my arm. By the time I was ready to ride again, she had gone lame and has never come back. Turns out she has navicular issues and ringbone.

Gloria Jean, bad Stormy! Very bad! No idea why he'd be like that. My roosters just love to get new girls when I give them the up and coming teenagers.

Well, Shadow has now been trounced by both Nora and Panda, LOL. She started in on them, first Nora. She is only as tall as the top of their legs, silly banty attack chicken! Nora ran her out the door, and Sunny, who is obviously head hen now, came up the ramp, looked in the pop door and gave them her best "stop it or I'll stop it for you" look, then left. Then Panda put the little princess in her place and Shadow went on a nest to pout.

Don't all their antics keep you hopping?

I wormed mine yesterday so today i gave them yogurt with some tiny bits of veg in it. Oh my, the hens went crazy for it. The ones born in May were skeptical but then fought over it. The mother hen refused to try it. It was on a colored birthday plate. I dumped it down into the shavings and she dived in with the little ones in hot pursuit. Not a smidgen was left. Not even a wet spot to clean up.

I love my hens. What am I going to do with Stormy? If he had a home where he could free range he probably would be a different roo. The 12x50 foot run is just not enough for a roo his size , to me. Do you know wnyone who would love to have a roo to use for free range. I would give him to a good home.

I've reached that point. He is not aggressive to people at all. Gloria Jean

Don't ya just love it when the girls sort things out for themselves? I always have to laugh at the look on Chiefs face when they do. It all happens so fast, and it's so convoluted, that unless you're watching carefully to what's going on, you'll have no clue what just happened or why. And that's the look Chief gets on his face! "Huh? What? Who? "
hu.gif
And then he'll sort of look around slowly, raise one of those monster feet of his, and try to figure out who he should be squishing with that big foot!

Poor guy!

Well now, Isaac! What in heaven's name was he thinking? Probably didn't like the idea of sharing any of his ladies this morning would be my guess. Sometimes Chief is very lenient with CB, and on other days, he'll trounce the little toe rag before they even go outside for the day. Every now and then, CB will manage to dart past me as the girls are all filing out the main door, and Chief will be hot on his tail feathers. Woe be to the little tyrant if Chief catches up to him. And usually he does. When he does, CB usually finds himself laying very still on the ground, with one of Chiefs monster feet holding his head to the ground. Nothing more than that. Chief has never been one for "overkill"

Give Isaac another chance Cyn. Chances are he's just having a bad day. We're all entitled to that, aren't we? Maybe Bandit said something that just ticked Isaac off. You know how mouthy these kids can be these days!

And they're so good at pushing our buttons, aren't they? Adult roosters are by no means immune to the antagonisms of teens and pre teens.

But seriously, you know Isaac's temperament Cyn. Would you consider this a fluke? Do you think that just possibly Ike had a valid reason for chasing Bandit? The chasing doesn't bother me as much as what would he have done once he caught Bandit?

That really is strange for Ike. I hope you figure it out. It would be nice to see him with a bunch of wee ones snuggled up to him at some future date! I so love stories of roo's that take equal part in the rearing of the chicks.

Yard: don't have a windows live id. I can't keep track of all different passwords. I was hoping to see your Barred Rocks.

Nella: very nice, I wish more people here would offer riding lessons or just casual through the woods rides. Not to many offer rides. I'm to old and to tired for more than a gentle ride. Is liability insurance a big factor?

I got the new ALBC newletter, though it's much nicer than any other newletter I get. Nice article on "breed type". "Heritage Feed for heritage chickens" too. "American" rabbits too.

Does anyone here have Cubalayas?
